National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) member and pilot Dr. Earl Weener told attendees at an EAA AirVenture 2014 forum on Wednesday that the safety of corporate aviation is “very good and getting better.” He said personal general aviation flights continue to account for the majority of aviation accidents, and most of those are caused by a loss of aircraft control in the air and on the ground.
Embraer will begin assembling its new midsize Legacy 450 and 500 business jets at its Melbourne, Fla. campus by 2016, build a major new plant expansion there and add 600 jobs. Company executives announced the moves here at AirVenture on Wednesday. Embraer Executive Jets senior vice president Jose Eduardo Costas added that certification of the fly-by-wire Legacy 500 is “imminent.”
American Champion Aircraft (ACA) announced on Wednesday at AirVenture that it would offer a diesel-powered version of its Denali Scout two-seat utility model, likely by 2016. The aircraft is currently powered by a 210-hp Lycoming IO-390.
SocialFlight, the free general aviation events website and mobile app, is celebrating its two-year anniversary at EAA AirVenture 2014. Users of the SocialFlight app and website, now numbering nearly 30,000, can add any aviation-related event to the site and view all the events in their local areas. A new feature in SocialFlight 4.0 is the addition of “things to do” at nearby airports in the U.S. and Canada.
Engine modification firm Blackhawk announced a deal with maintenance program provider Jet Support Services Inc. (JSSI) at EAA AirVenture 2014 yesterday that will give customers the option of upgrading to new Blackhawk conversions in place of standard overhauls. Under the deal, JSSI will contribute to the value of the overhaul while customers would make up the difference in price.
Stemme AG of Strausberg, Germany (Booth 117), is showcasing its S10VT high-performance motor glider this week at EAA AirVenture 2014 in Oshkosh, Wis., on the heels of forging a manufacturing and marketing agreement with light sport aircraft OEM Remos Aircraft of Pasewalk, Germany. The S10VT, powered by a 115-hp Rotax 914 F turbocharged engine, features a patented folding propeller that enables the engine to be deployed or stowed in a matter of seconds, without changing the aircraft’s aerodynamics or center of gravity.
“We’re excited about our expanding customer base,” said Rhett Ross, president of Continental Motors, commenting about the growing number of aircraft manufacturers that have committed to jet-A-powered diesel engines. The newest customer for Continental’s CD-155 engine is Cessna, which selected the 155-hp diesel to power its Turbo Skyhawk JT-A.
Quest Aircraft brought a Kodiak single-engine turboprop equipped with the newly certified Summit interior to EAA AirVenture 2014 this week, along with another Kodiak fitted with the base Tundra interior. The Summit features a club-four layout in the cabin, with one or an optional two seats in the rear of the cabin.
With the education of students about aviation as one of the goals at EAA AirVenture 2014, which is being held this week in Oshkosh, Wis., Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University chose the venue to announced the launch of its free online Aviation 101 course aimed at introducing high school and middle school students to the aviation industry.
Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) delivered the first production PW306D1 engine that will power Cessna’s new midsize Latitude twinjet, which is expected to achieve certification and commence deliveries in mid-2015. The PW306D1, a development of the PW306C/D engines that have powered the airframer’s Sovereign and Sovereign+ jets since 2004, is rated at a maximum takeoff thrust of 5,907 pounds and, according to P&WC, delivers the best thrust-to-weight ratio in its class, as well as higher thrust to climb and better overall specific fuel consumption than previous engines in the PW306 series.
