UK-based CAE Oxford Aviation Academy placed an order for 35 Piper airplanes today at the Sun ’n Fun Fly-in in Lakeland, Fla. The agreement includes firm orders for 22 Archer TX piston singles and 13 piston twins, as well as parts and service.

Pilot Mall’s new user-configurable instrument panel for table-top basic flight training devices is making its public debut this week behind Hangar B at the Sun ’n Fun Fly-in in Lakeland, Fla. The Flight Training Cockpit–Advanced Panel, brainchild of Pilot Mall president Neil Glazer and Michael Moore of Coldwater, Ontario-based Redfab, is designed to work with Microsoft Flight Sim on a PC platform. It uses Saitek ProFlite instruments, avionics and flight controls in a 21- by 31-inch metal instrument panel with pop-out cutouts.

Just before Sun ’n Fun Garmin (Booth No. D-034) unveiled a major update to its Garmin Pilot iPad app, dynamic maps drawn from a vector-based mapping database. The new dynamic maps allow for many improvements to Garmin Pilot, chief of which is labels always remaining upright in the new track-up mode as the airplane turns and the maps adjusts to the new direction.

Signature Flight Support (Booth No. N-030/031), the FBO chain that is well known in the turbine aircraft world, is exhibiting this week at the Sun ’n Fun Fly-in in Lakeland, Fla., to build awareness of its support for grassroots general aviation (GA). “We’re doing a big GA push,” a company spokesman told AIN, “and we’ve recently partnered with the Experimental Aircraft Association, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and Recreational Aircraft Foundation in an effort to help enhance the pilot ranks.”

Diamond Aircraft (Booth No. MD-023B) is introducing a new version of its DA40 piston single–the XLT–with an improved, “premium” interior this week at the Sun ’n Fun Fly-in in Lakeland, Fla. The new XLT features several detail enhancements, including molded seat patterns with integrated Diamond embossed padded headrests and improved lumbar contour in both the front and rear seats. All seats are covered with “infrared controlled technology” leather that reflects IR rays in direct sunlight and maintains 20 degree C lower surface temperature than traditional leathers.

The ForeFlight team has released a major update to the ForeFlight Mobile iPad app–Version 5–featuring a new hazard advisor with terrain and obstacle awareness, new runway advisor features such as a traffic pattern advisor, runway winds and automatic display of taxi diagrams. The terrain map and Hazard Advisor work only on newer iPads (iPad mini, 2 and later) and iPhones (4 and later).

Quest Aircraft is displaying one of its Kodiak turboprop singles with its newly certified Timberline interior this week at the Sun ’n Fun Fly-in in Lakeland, Fla. The new interior features Kydex panels with composites, which will contribute to a weight reduction and thus improve the aircraft’s useful load.

Sagetech’s Clairity portable ADS-B receiver, which began shipping on March 27, is on display this week at the company’s booth (No. D-028) at the Sun ’n Fun Fly-in in Lakeland, Fla. The device comes in two versions: a baseline Clairity unit that receives ADS-B signals on both 978 and 1090 MHz and the Clarity SV with both frequencies and an attitude heading reference system (AHRS), which can be used to display attitude on compatible devices and applications.
