Vero Beach, Fla.-based Piper Aircraft today appointed 36-year aviation industry veteran Randy Groom as its new executive vice president of sales, marketing and customer support. He will report directly to Piper president and CEO Kevin Gould. Piper said Groom is the right fit to continue building and expanding the aircraft manufacturer’s market share across all model lines and to improve customer support.

The NTSB is investigating a near-midair between a United Airlines Boeing 777 and a Cessna 182 over San Francisco on Saturday. The aircraft missed each other by just 300 feet.

Bombardier this morning released its financial results for the fourth quarter of its fiscal year and the year ending January 31, and the slippage appeared minimal. Total revenues for both commercial and business aircraft totaled $9.4 billion, down slightly from $10 billion in the previous fiscal year, and the total backlog for both sectors was $16.7 billion, compared with $23.5 billion as of Jan. 31, 2009.

Demand for aircraft charter flights appears flat going into this month, with the demand index generated by online charter portal Avinode standing at 93.03 today, less than one point above the 92.37 recorded on March 1. The index this month is five points below where it stood on April 1 last year at 98.09. At the same time, average charter flight hour rates (logged in euros) have also increased somewhat on both sides of the Atlantic.

The top FBO in the AIN 2010 FBO Survey–released this morning–is once again Texas City of Sugar Land-owned and operated Sugar Land Regional Airport west of Houston. Long-time favorite Wilson Air Center’s Memphis, Tenn. base took second place, the same spot it held last year after a long run of first-place finishes. This year, Tampa International Jet Center made a big move from eighth place last year to capture third place.
