Amid the wave of new FBO construction, AirFlite at California’s Long Beach Airport is proof that a well maintained FBO can stand the test of time, with the 22-year-old facility receiving a 9.6 rating out of 10, for the highest score in AIN’s 2014 FBO Survey for the Americas. This year’s survey received nearly 12,000 evaluations for FBOs in 91 countries.

Business aircraft passengers flying out of UK airports are facing rate increases for air passenger duty (APD) of between 50 and 58 percent under revisions to the tax the government announced last month.
Gulfstream Aerospace recently delivered the 300th outfitted G450, a milestone that comes nearly nine years after the twinjet entered service in May 2005. “The delivery…is a proud moment for Gulfstream because it demonstrates the reliability, performance and comfort the aircraft provides and reflects continuing interest from customers,” said Scott Neal, Gulfstream senior vice president of worldwide sales and marketing. “The G450 remains the market leader in its class.
Continental Motors, a subsidiary of Beijing-based Avic, partnered with STC and custom design and installation services firm ASI Innovation of Reims, France, to acquire the type certificate, inventory and manufacturing rights for the F406 twin turboprop from Reims Aviation, which was declared insolvent last year. The F406 is an unpressurized, 14-passenger airplane manufactured by Reims Aviation and originally designed in cooperation with Cessna in the early 1980s.

Piper Aircraft delivered the 550th Meridian turboprop single yesterday to a Swedish customer, Håkan Svensson, the CEO of Öckerö-based Aston Harald. This also marked the first new Meridian to enter service in Sweden. Svensson, who is pursuing his pilot license, plans to use the aircraft in his maritime and transportation consultancy business. The Meridian will be operated by a professional pilot until he achieves sufficient ratings and experience to fly as pilot-in-command in European airspace.
Former Bombardier Learjet chief flight-test pilot Pete Reynolds will be inducted into the Kansas Aviation Hall of Fame on April 15 at a ceremony hosted by the Kansas Aviation Museum and Wichita Aero Club. Reynolds had a major role in the development, testing and certification of virtually every Learjet model between 1973, when he joined Learjet, and 2003, when he retired.
The European Aviation Safety Agency STC’d Hartzell Propeller’s swept airfoil composite five-blade propellers on the Daher-Socata TBM 700/850. First installation of the new higher performance Hartzell prop on a European-registered TBM was recently performed at the Socata North America Service Center in Pembroke Pines, Fla. According to Hartzell, the new propeller for the turboprop single results in faster takeoff acceleration, higher cruise speeds and better climb, along with less noise.
NBAA appointed business aviation veteran Greg Voos yesterday as the association’s Southeast U.S. regional representative, covering D.C., Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. He replaces Harry Houckes, who retired in February. Voos–a certified aviation manager and IS-BAO auditor–most recently served as Home Depot’s aviation office manager.
Marenco Swisshelicopter signed 11 letters of intent for its all-composite light turbine helicopter at Heli-Expo in February, the company announced on Friday. These signings brought the total number of LOIs for its single-engine SKYe SH09 to 59 units, for deliveries ranging from 2015 to 2017. The Swiss startup helicopter manufacturer brought its prototype to the show, which further delayed its first flight. Swisshelicopter said the SKYe will make its maiden flight “in the coming weeks.”
