On May 9, procedures and an application process will be in effect for reimbursing FBOs and other providers of general aviation ground-support services at five airports in the Washington, D.C. area “for the direct and incremental financial losses they incurred while the airports were closed” after 9/11.

Operators who own a share of an aircraft are to be included in the International Registry of Mobile Assets (IRMA), giving them the same Cape Town Treaty protection sole owners have had since March 2006. IRMA management company Aviareto plans to announce this month that it will permit registration of multiple owners in a single aircraft.
The FAA is facing questions about its proposed Airport Improvement Program (AIP) redistribution and its possible effect on the needs of small airports. A preliminary report from the Government Accountability Office says smaller airports will not be able to rely on passenger facility charges to offset any reduction in AIP funding.
Although the decision has not yet been officially announced, AIN has learned the Departments of Transportation and Homeland Security have agreed that loran should continue operating for the foreseeable future. Key influences were the unanimous endorsement by an independent panel of experts convened by the agencies, plus the overwhelming positive response to an earlier public survey regarding the system’s continuance.
Under a notice of proposed rulemaking published today, the FAA is seeking comments on its intention to increase the duration of first-class and third-class medicals for airmen under the age of 40. Currently, the maximum validity of a first-class medical certificate is six months, regardless of age.
