Rockwell Collins announced the new smaller and lighter compact HGS-3500 head-up guidance system today at the FSF/NBAA Corporate Aviation Safety Seminar in San Diego. At roughly one-fifth the installed cost of a typical long-range jet’s head-up display (HUD), the HGS-3500 promises to bring the safety benefits of HUD technology to the segment spanning single-engine turboprops to midsize jets.

Aircraft operators assigned to the UK for compliance with the European Union emissions trading scheme (EU-ETS) are already facing additional “subsistence” (read administrative) costs, even before the requirement to pay for carbon emissions begins in January. Unlike most EU states, the UK government is requiring its Environment Agency to recover these administrative costs in full and directly from operators.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt on Sunday announced changes to air traffic controller scheduling practices that will allow controllers more time for rest between shifts. The fact that the leaders worked on the controller fatigue issue over a weekend underscores the attention they’re giving to the issue in the wake of several incidents where lone controllers have fallen asleep late at night.

The General Aviation Airport Coalition (GAAC) was officially formed late last week to “preserve and promote,” on a national level, GA airports in the U.S. It consists initially of 24 founding members–all GA airport operators–from across the continental U.S. that began meeting late last year to discuss GA airport issues.

Republican congressman John Mica (Fla.) continued his quixotic war with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) last week when he slammed the agency for failing to show at a hearing last Thursday on universal pilot’s licenses. “I can assure you, we’ll have the TSA testify at some point in the future, maybe in a joint hearing with Homeland Security,” Mica said.
