Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America (MHIA), the Addison, Texas-based subsidiary of the Japanese company that built the MU-2 turboprop twin, has acquired Intercontinental Jet of Tulsa, Okla. The company, which already provides support for about 50 percent of the 400-strong MU-2 fleet, will become MHIA’s first factory-owned service center. There are also five factory-authorized service facilities in the U.S.

Traffic is picking up and hangar space is returning to New Orleans Lakefront Airport, more than six months after Hurricane Katrina caused millions of dollars’ worth of damage. Refurbishment of Million Air’s 1930s-era art deco Moffett hangar should conclude by the middle of this month. Million Air will also offer space in the 22,000-sq-ft former Atlantic Aviation hangar, due to open next week.
Beginning June 1, buyers of any new Bombardier business jet can opt for a new cost-per-flight-hour maintenance support program. Under “Smart Maintenance Plus,” unscheduled and scheduled maintenance and certain unscheduled labor costs are covered for five years or 2,500 flight hours for Challengers and Global Expresses and five years or 2,250 flight hours for Learjets.
Westport, Conn.-based Avocet Aircraft has canceled its program to develop a $2 million, six-seat very light jet known as the ProJet. “It just wasn’t the right time to be going forward with the program,” Avocet chairman and founder Carey Wolchok told AIN. Avocet and Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) publicly announced their collaboration on the ProJet in August 2003, with certification then expected by 2007.
The FAA is scheduled tomorrow to issue a notice that compliance with revised drug and alcohol testing requirements for air carriers has been delayed to October 10. The final rule, with an original compliance date of April 10, aims to clarify conflicting guidance issued in the 1990s by making it clear that “safety-sensitive functions performed by persons under subcontract at any tier” are subject to testing.
