According to Raytheon’s second-quarter report, released this morning, Raytheon Aircraft posted net quarter sales of $745 million, up 8 percent from $687 million in the second quarter of last year, thanks to more deliveries of new aircraft. The division recorded a quarterly profit of $41 million versus $33 million in the same period last year.

NBAA’s board of directors yesterday selected Archie Trammell–a weather radar specialist, aviation journalist and lifelong safety advocate–as the recipient of the 2006 NBAA Award for Meritorious Service to Aviation. The board also chose to bestow FlightSafety International veteran James Waugh Jr. with the 2006 NBAA John P. “Jack” Doswell Award.

On Saturday afternoon, Farnborough Aircraft’s F1 Kestrel prototype (N352F) lifted off the runway at Bend Airport, Ore., for its maiden flight. The milestone marks the completion of nearly five years of design and development since the newly formed Farnborough Aircraft Corp. Ltd. (FACL) began work on the all-composite, turboprop single. “This is a fantastic achievement,” said FACL chairman and CEO Geoffrey Galley.

The NTSB today released the preliminary report for last Tuesday’s fatal crash of the Spectrum 33 prototype. According to the Safety Board, witnesses said the airplane entered a right roll almost immediately after takeoff from Spanish Fork Airport, Utah. The roll continued to about 90 degrees right wing down when the right wingtip hit the ground.

Forward Vision of Russell, Pa., is working on a King Air 90 STC for its low-cost infrared enhanced vision system, according to company co-owner Patrick Farrell. Its EVS uses an uncooled barium-strontium-titanate infrared sensor that is immune to heat and sun damage.

On Friday, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) reported record-breaking shipment and billing figures. In the first half of this year, shipments of general aviation airplanes totaled 1,843 units (including pistons), a 19.1-percent increase over the same period last year, with industry billings rising 34.9 percent to $8.8 billion.
