The Embraer Legacy 500 received type certification from Brazil’s civil aviation agency, Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil (ANAC), this afternoon during a ceremony at LABACE 2014 in São Paulo, Brazil. The company expects to obtain FAA approval for its clean-sheet, fly-by-wire midsize business jet “in the upcoming weeks” and from EASA “thereafter.”

Business aircraft flying in the U.S. rose for the eighth straight month, with activity in July up 1.5 percent from a year ago, according to data released yesterday by aviation services company Argus. And it appears that this indicator is gaining strength again this month, with Argus projecting a 1.4-percent year-over-year rise for August.
Part 91 activity once again is leading the pack, climbing by 2.7 percent from a year ago, followed by fractional flying with a 2-percent gain. Part 135 charter flight activity slipped a bit last month, falling by 0.4 percent year-over-year.
The LABACE show’s 11th edition opened today at São Paulo’s Congonhas Airport, with the mood of Brazilian business and general aviation cautiously optimistic. “Once more in 2013 the market grew by 5 to 6 percent, as it has for the last decade,” said Eduardo Marson, president of Brazilian business aviation industry group and LABACE organizer ABAG.
Surf Air placed an order for up to 65 Pilatus PC-12 NG turboprop singles–15 firm and 50 options–worth an estimated $312 million, the company told AIN. It has also raised another $8 million in funding, for a total of $17 million. Deliveries of the new PC-12s begin in October, with three planned this year and nine next year.
NetJets subsidiary NetJets China successfully completed proving runs in China, the fourth phase in the process to receive an air operator certificate (AOC) from the Civil Aviation Administration of China. The proving runs were conducted just over a week ago in two Hawker 800s that will be the first aircraft in the NetJets China fleet.
At last week’s Black Hat USA 2014 conference, Ruben Santamarta, the principal security consultant at IOActive Security Services, raised the issue of whether satellite communications systems have security vulnerabilities that might allow hackers to gain access to aircraft systems. Santamarta and IOActive published a white paper that discusses security vulnerabilities in air, sea and land satcom systems. “Today we are disclosing details to help people verify those findings,” Santamarta explained.
Gulfstream Aerospace named SkyJet Aviation Services as a commercial sales representative in central Africa, covering Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar. “Business aviation is growing in this part of Africa, especially in Nigeria, and shows no signs of slowing down,” said Gulfstream senior vice president of worldwide sales and marketing Scott Neal. SkyJet, a private charter airline and aircraft maintenance provider founded in 2006, is headquartered in Kaduna, a city in central northern Nigeria, and has offices in Lagos and Abuja.
Landmark Aviation has completed its new FBO campus at San Diego International Airport, where it is the lone services provider. The 12.4-acre complex includes nearly six acres of ramp space and 115,000 sq ft of hangar space capable of sheltering aircraft up to a G650. The 19,000-sq-ft, two-story terminal includes a passenger lounge, viewing deck, fitness center, conference room, pilot lounge with snooze room, gourmet café and office space. The facility lays claim to being the first FBO complex built to meet the U.S.
The FAA is reviewing a response from Norwood (Mass.) Airport officials to allegations they violated federal obligations requirements and discriminated against Boston Executive Helicopters. In a complaint filed in May under the provisions of FAR Part 13, Boston Executive Helicopters said the airport’s actions “were clearly done to prevent” it from building an FBO.
Cessna Aircraft announced today at LABACE that its Citation M2 received certification from civil aviation authorities in Brazil and Argentina, paving the way for deliveries to begin in these two Latin American countries. “The market in Latin America has shown tremendous interest in the Citation M2 due to its competitive acquisition and operating costs, its airport performance and its onboard systems,” said Cessna vice president of international sales Robert Gibbs.
