Gulfstream Aerospace’s two newest aircraft–the super-midsize G280 and wide-cabin G650–are both on final approach to receive their respective FAA certification, the company announced yesterday.

“The Block Aircraft Registration Request [Barr] program doesn’t really provide privacy; it’s just a barrier,” Dustin Hoffman, president of Los Angeles-based IT engineering firm Exigent Systems, told AIN. Hoffman, who has a private pilot certificate and flies a piston single for his business, set out to prove his point at the Defcon 20 computer security conference earlier this month in Las Vegas.
If automatic federal budget cuts known as “sequestration” take effect in January, the Obama Administration and the FAA could ramp up efforts to impose aviation user fees to plug the gap, NBAA fears. Under sequestration, the FAA budget could be cut by $1 billion annually, according to an Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) study released on Monday.
Citing its own research and that of Corporate Jet Investor in the UK, Hawker Beechcraft expects strong growth in demand for business aviation financing in Brazil over the next five years.
The Wichita-based OEM said the study reveal that, in Brazil, 46.9 percent of experts anticipate demand for business aviation financing to increase “dramatically between now and 2017,” and 40.6 percent expect only a slight increase. Only China has higher expected growth, Hawker Beechcraft noted.
Cessna Aircraft announced today at LABACE that it has again increased the range–to 2,500 nm–of its in-development, midsize Citation Latitude. When announced at the NBAA Convention last year, the Latitude was originally expected to have a range of 2,000 nm. In February, Cessna stretched the airplane’s legs to 2,300 nm, and after further discussions with customers it decided to extend the range again, to 2,500 nm.
Despite predictions of significantly increased private jet movements during the London 2012 Olympics, overall industry traffic levels were around 25 percent below expectations, according to online charter broker PrivateFly. The UK Department for Transport had estimated 3,000 additional private jet movements during the Games.
GKN Aerospace won a contract from Triumph Aerostructures’ Vought Aircraft division this week to design, build and supply composite winglets and ailerons for the Bombardier Global 7000 and 8000 ultra-long-range business jets. The ailerons will be developed and manufactured at GKN’s wing structures operation in Munich, Germany, while the winglets will be fabricated at its Isle of Wight facility in the UK. The company is already contracted to provide winglets for the Bombardier CSeries and supplies winglets for several other business aircraft.
Superior Aviation Beijing Co. Ltd., the Chinese company vying to buy Hawker Beechcraft, has hired Washington, D.C.-based lobbying firm Locke Lord Strategies to represent it on “aviation issues” in the U.S. Capitol. Locke Lord is also providing legal advice to Superior as it works to finalize its $1.79 billion deal for the Wichita-based aircraft manufacturer. According to the lobbying registration report, Locke Lord partners Phil Rivers, Mark Siegel and Shane Doucet, as well as senior policy adviser Walter Smith Jr., are handling the account.
The Air Charter Safety Foundation (ACSF) has gone live with its aviation safety action program (Asap) for on-demand charter operators. The demonstration program currently has two charter operators under the jurisdiction of the Minneapolis FSDO, and will eventually expand to other charter operators in the FAA Great Lakes Region. Asap allows employees of participating air carriers, fractional managers and repair station certificate holders to identify and report safety issues to management and to the FAA for resolution, without fear of reprisal.
L-3 Avionics Systems announced today that the FAA has granted TSO approval for its GH-3900 electronic standby instrument system. Several business aircraft OEMs have selected the GH-3900 as standard equipment, including Bombardier for the Learjet 70/75 and Cessna for the Citation Ten. Additionally, Rockwell Collins has selected the GH-3900 ESIS for its Pro Line Fusion Flight Deck. The primary flight display backup instrument is capable of meeting airworthiness requirements for almost any fixed- or rotary-wing transport-category aircraft, says L-3.
