German police arrested AvCraft Aviation CEO Ben Bartel last Wednesday at Frankfurt International Airport for tax evasion. Bartel, architect of a failed attempt to resurrect Germany’s Fairchild Dornier from bankruptcy, allegedly evaded €7 million ($8.53 million) in taxes through a fictitious transaction in the Cayman Islands.

A Twin Commander taking off full length from 5,000-foot Runway 12R at North Las Vegas Airport for a VFR surveillance flight appeared never to get out of ground effect before it hit terrain about 600 feet southeast of the runway. The twin recip was destroyed and the pilot and two passengers were injured in the July 21 accident. Witnesses told the NTSB that they saw the airplane airborne but not climbing.
MD Helicopters completed a restructuring last month in which Patriarch Partners, a New York financial firm, acquired a controlling interest in the Mesa, Ariz. helicopter manufacturer. RDM, a Netherlands-based group that purchased the company from Boeing in 1999, retains a minority interest.
A study of five commercialized ATC providers by the Government Accountability Office concludes that the safety of air navigation services “has remained the same or improved” compared with when they were operated as noncommercial government agencies.
Deliveries of new turbine business airplanes in the first half of this year increased by more than 31 percent compared with the same period last year, according to the latest shipment report from the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) released Thursday evening. The report shows that OEMs delivered 100 more airplanes (87 jets and 13 turboprops) in the first six months of this year than in the same time last year.
