Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer on Friday announced second-quarter sales of $1.63 billion, up 43.7 percent from a year ago, and a profit of $134.4 million, a significant increase over the $31.2 million recorded for the same period last year. Embraer’s firm-order backlog as of June 30 reached a record high of $20.7 billion, $6 billion of which is for its Phenom, Legacy and Lineage executive jets.

Hawker Beechcraft today reported increased orders, improved sales and higher earnings during the second quarter versus the same period last year. Net bookings for the quarter totaled $1.7 billion, resulting in a new record backlog of $7.4 billion. Second-quarter revenues increased by $327.6 million year-over-year to $1.02 billion, primarily due to the increase in aircraft deliveries.

Merritt Island, Fla.-based Comp Air is moving ahead with plans to certify the Comp Air 12 and will not offer a kit version of the hefty turboprop single, according to a Comp Air spokesman. “We received word just the other day that we are going to get our funding for the CA-12 project,” he said.

The East Coast Jets-operated Hawker 800A that crashed Thursday morning at Owatonna (Minn.) Degner Regional Airport, killing all eight on board, briefly touched down on 5,500-foot Runway 30 before the crew decided to abort the landing and attempt a go-around. “The airplane did land and for some reason the flight crew made the decision to take off again,” said NTSB investigator Steven Chealander.
