J.P. Morgan North American Equity Research’s latest business jet monthly update, released yesterday, paints a somewhat optimistic picture even though the data remains “mixed.” It said that business jet flying activity picked up steam in October, while pre-owned inventories continued to dwindle last month, settling at 10.3 percent. However, it is concerned that pre-owned prices haven’t yet found their footing.

The comment period for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) on charter brokers is now closed. The NPRM stems from NTSB recommendations following the crash of a chartered Bombardier Challenger 601 on Nov. 28, 2004, in Montrose, Colo., which raised the issue of how difficult it can be for charter customers to know the identity of the charter operator when trips are arranged on their behalf.
After climbing to its highest level since 2008 in October, business aircraft activity “cooled down” last month, according to TraqPak data released yesterday by aviation services company Argus. Overall, flying in this segment fell 2 percent year-over-year.
The Eurocopter EC135 light twin that crashed into a busy pub on November 29 in Glasgow, Scotland, was intact when it hit the roof, but neither the main rotor nor the fenestron tail rotor were rotating at that time, the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch preliminary report reveals. The helicopter had been flying for one hour and 33 minutes when the pilot requested clearance to return to Glasgow City Heliport. No further radio transmission was received.
Gulfstream Aerospace and Jet Aviation parent company General Dynamics announced on Friday that it is promoting Robert Smith to president of Jet Aviation. He will report to Joe Lombardo, executive vice president of General Dynamics’ aerospace group. Smith succeeds Daniel Clare, who is being tapped as the CFO of Gulfstream. Both appointments are effective January 1.
Ottawa, Ontario-based TrueNorth said its promotional offer for the company’s MagnaStar replacement aircraft telephone system, Simphone, is ending on December 20. MagnaStar is being shut down on December 31, and reportedly “hundreds” of users have not upgraded yet.
Ross Aviation acquired the assets of FBO Louisiana Aircraft at Baton Rouge (La.) Metropolitan Airport. Like the other facilities acquired by Ross, the FBO will continue to operate under its own name. In addition, Landon Petty will continue to serve as its general manager. This is Ross Aviation’s sixth acquisition this year and brings the Ross Aviation roster of FBOs to 19 airports in 11 states stretching from Hawaii to New Jersey and from Florida to Washington State.

Zurich, Switzerland-based AC Aviation Charter has opened a new office in Vienna, Austria. Three charter sales agents will be based in the new office in Vienna, and the team will be lead by Bernhard Wipfler. The company’s current charter management fleet consists of two Learjet 40s, three Falcon 900s and a Beechjet 400A, Citation XLS, Challenger 605 and Challenger 850 and GV.
