Bombardier Aerospace’s business jet division accounted for the bulk of net orders and deliveries last year at the company, according to full-year 2013 results released today. The company delivered 238 aircraft (180 business jets and 58 airliners) last year, up from 233 (179 business jets and 54 airliners) in 2012, boosting revenues by 11 percent, to $18.2 billion, and profits by $87 million, to $893 million. It expects to deliver 280 aircraft–200 business jets and 80 airliners–this year.

According to J.P.Morgan North America Equity Research’s latest monthly business jet report, data continues to show a “tentatively firming” market and the analyst believes that “2014 will be a key inflection year for business jet demand.” Its most recent data shows a continuation of recent trends: declining used inventory and growth of flight operations–both of which bode well for new aircraft demand–but declining pre-owned pricing.
During Bombardier’s 2013 financial results conference call this morning, president and CEO Pierre Beaudoin provided some insight into the delays affecting the all-composite Learjet 85 program, which had originally been slated to enter service in 2013. Last year, Bombardier revised this to projected first flight of the first flight test vehicle, FTV1, by year-end 2013, though the midsize jet still has yet to fly. Certification and entry into service were also moved to mid-2014 earlier last year, but that timeline will undoubtedly have to be once again pushed farther right into the future.
NBAA is asking the FAA to reconsider a proposed change to aircraft weight-and-balance requirements that would require operators to use actual weights of passengers and bags instead of the current standard average passenger and baggage weights, or conduct a survey to develop average weights for each operator every three years. The association comments were prompted by the release of a draft advisory circular, AC 120-27F “Weight and Balance control,” in November.
AgustaWestland gained EASA approval for its new AW189 medium-twin helicopter on February 7. The company said that delivery of the first two AW189s in offshore configuration to Bristow Group is “imminent.”
More than 100 AW189s are on order. To date, Bristow has placed a firm order for 11 AW189s for use on a UK search-and-rescue contract and for offshore operations. Other large fleet customers include Gulf Helicopters and Era, with 15 orders each.
Cessna Aircraft is set to deliver the first Citation CJ4 going to a Japanese customer. The Wichita-based aircraft manufacturer won a contract for three CJ4s from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) through its special-mission affiliate, Kanematsu of Japan. The twinjets will be equipped with flight inspection systems and as part of the JCAB’s mission will confirm the accuracy of air navigation capabilities, air routes and ATC facilities in Japan.
More than 2,000 Gogo Biz on-board broadband systems have been installed in business aircraft, Aircell announced today. This milestone was reached 4.5 years after the Gogo Biz service was introduced, which Aircell said makes “it the most rapidly adopted broadband service in business aviation history.” Jet Aviation performed the first Gogo Biz installation in June 2009 for the launch customer, a corporate aircraft operator based in the Midwest U.S. Gogo Biz allows passengers and crews to have Internet access above 10,000 feet in the continental U.S.
NBAA welcomed passage by the House of Representatives of H.R.3578, which compels the FAA to establish a rulemaking process before implementing any mandatory pilot-screening requirement for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) as a condition for getting a medical certificate. In November, the FAA announced a plan to begin requiring OSA screening for pilots with a body mass index of 40 or greater. “The business aviation community thanks lawmakers for passing this measure seeking a fully transparent process for any consideration of OSA screening,” said NBAA president and CEO Ed Bolen.
The top scheduled destinations for Flexjet owners over this Valentine’s Day holiday weekend include Aspen; New York City; Palm Beach, Fla.; the Caribbean; and Mexico, including Cabo and Puerto Vallarta, according to the fractional provider’s analysis of hundreds of customer flight plans. It said travelers are evenly split into two categories this year: those who are looking for a getaway to the snow and others who prefer to bask in the sun. Nearly two-thirds of Flexjet’s holiday travelers are booked on a super-midsize Challenger 300 or large-cabin Challenger 604, it noted.
Robinson will display a new avionics suite for its helicopters at Heli-Expo, which will be held February 25 to 27 in Anaheim, Calif. Most options for the new panels meet ADS-B in and out requirements and include Aspen Avionics primary flight and multifunction displays, and Garmin GTN 600/700 touchscreen navigators, GTR 225B com radio, GMA 350H audio panel, GDL 88 universal access transceiver and GTX 330ES transponder. The FAA has already granted approval for most of these new equipment installations.
