Helicopter manufacturers are expected to deliver 4,800 to 5,500 new turbine-powered civilian models in the next five years, Honeywell predicts in its annual market forecast. “What the operators told us was that for the most part, far more operators plan on increasing their flight activity than those who reported they were going to cut back on flight operations,” Charles Park, Honeywell’s market analyst, told AIN. “The actual usage of the platforms should increase as well.”
HAI president Matt Zuccaro gave an upbeat assessment of the helicopter industry on the eve of Heli-Expo 2014. “Air tours are doing well, corporate operations have re-established themselves and offshore oil and gas work is very busy right now, so it’s a pretty positive picture,” he said. Nonetheless, the industry faces challenges including a potential shortage of pilots and mechanics.
“The younger generation has so many options,” said Zuccaro. “We’re starting a sales and marketing campaign to show them being a pilot or a mechanic is a good career path.”
Scott’s-Bell 47 selected the Sagem ICDS-8A glass cockpit suite as part of the standard avionics package for the new 47GT-6 helicopter. This selection is the latest in a series of developments geared at bringing the turbine-powered 47GT-6 closer to production.
Moog’s third-generation lightweight Moog-FTS Stores Management System (SMS) is flying with the Bell 407GT and the MD530G and can be adapted easily to other platforms. Jason Reichard, Moog business unit director, said that the main advantages of the new system are its lower cost, much lighter weight and ease of installation across a variety of platforms including helicopter, fixed-wing, marine and land.
San Francisco-based Macquarie Rotorcraft Leasing (MRL) purchased two Sikorsky S-92As for its growing fleet aimed at supporting operators in the oil-and-gas and search-and-rescue markets, the company announced today at Heli-Expo. The two S-92s will be leased back to Avincis subsidiary Bond Offshore Helicopters and will be delivered in the second quarter. MRL, a wholly owned subsidiary of Australia’s Macquarie Bank, also purchased two S-92As and two S-76Ds in November and recently added an additional S-76D and two other helicopters to its roster.
Elbit Systems is launching two new products this week at Heli-Expo: SkyVis and Clearvision Heli EVS. SkyVis combines Elbit’s helmet-mounted display with commercially certifiable line-of-sight and daytime head-up display capabilities, day or night, with or without night-vision goggles, in all phases of flight and in marginal weather. Clearvision Heli EVS is a multi-spectral enhanced vision system designed for helicopters that provides improved situational awareness. It offers a 35-degree field of view and is designed to help pilots cope with low-visibility conditions.
Trinidad’s National Helicopter Service Limited (NHSL) celebrated the delivery of its first Sikorsky S-76D on January 31. The new helicopter, which is leased from Milestone Aviation, will be based at the company’s facility at Camden Airfield in Couva, Trinidad and Tobago, and will be devoted primarily to the use of multinational oil and gas producer Repsol. NHSL, formerly the air division (helicopter unit) of the Ministry of National Security, is a joint venture between the Government of Trinidad and Tobago and The National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago.
Spectro Jet-Care–which provides laboratory analysis of aircraft oil, fuel, hydraulic fluid and debris–has added advanced optical imaging equipment to its arsenal of tools at its facilities in New Jersey, the UK and Switzerland. The new equipment allows extremely detailed analysis of chips found on magnetic chip detectors, in filters or within fluid samples, the company said. It also provides a depth of field and resolution that is better than that of conventional optical microscopes, as well as allows the ability to view the magnified images in 3-D.
Jet Support Services, which provides hourly cost aircraft maintenance programs, has begun a new phase of improvements to its customer portal, MyJSSI. Enhancements include simplified navigation, a cleaner submit flight hours page, better contacts integration and a new minimum flight hours calculator. JSSI customers can access MyJSSI from their computers, or through an app on their tablets and smartphones.
