Marcus Schrenker, a 38-year-old financial manager under investigation by the SEC, apparently attempted to fake his own death on Sunday by parachuting from his Piper Meridian before the turboprop single crashed at about 9:15 p.m. in a swampy area near Milton, Fla., according to an FAA preliminary report.

The official Brazilian report on the September 2006 midair between an Embraer Legacy and a Boeing 737 is a “missed opportunity for the Brazilian aviation authorities to restore trust and safety in the national aviation system,” according to a statement by the International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers’ Associations (Ifatca).

The public auction for the assets of bankrupt Eclipse Aviation is scheduled for tomorrow, followed by the bankruptcy court’s selection of the winner on Friday. Some interested parties have visited Eclipse recently, according to an Eclipse spokeswoman.

Despite reports indicating declining flight hours for 2008, the number of business aircraft accidents increased from 2007, according to year-end statistics compiled by Boca Raton, Fla.-based aviation safety analyst Robert E. Breiling Associates. The totals show a rise in the number of business aviation accidents from 55 in 2007 to 69 in 2008, while the number of fatal accidents rose correspondingly from 17 to 24.

NBAA is fighting to eliminate from a bill to reform the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP) wording that would “require divestment of private aircraft or leases.” TARP was passed by Congress in October to acquire banks’ troubled assets in an effort to unfreeze the credit market. The proposal regarding business airplanes was introduced on Friday by Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee.
