Spring semester classes at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) started today despite an F2 tornado that ripped through the campus and destroyed most of the training aircraft on Christmas Day. There were only four people on campus at the time and no injuries were reported, according to a school official.

Under an FAA proposal, certain ILS approaches, localizer-type directional aids (LDA), microwave landing systems (MLS) and nondirectional beacons (NDB) at some 25 U.S. airports would become unmonitored by ATC or FSS facilities due to their low annual activity or the fact they are not authorized for alternate airport filing when the control tower is closed.
The NTSB final report on the May 2005 crash of a Mitsubishi MU-2B-25 in Hillsboro, Ore., found several causes, notably mishandling a power loss due to a lack of recent flight experience and recurrent training by the pilot. While flight logs provided by the family showed more than 500 hours operating an MU-2, the pilot’s last flight before the accident flight was 14 years earlier.
In May last year, the FAA said it would delay until January 1 this year a decision to limit “priority service” for aircraft registration in connection with conducting international flights to allow only one request per aircraft (by N-number) in any three-month period due to staffing limitations at the agency’s aircraft registration branch.
Two fatal business jet accidents in the first two weeks of this year claimed the lives of four pilots. A Cessna 525 operated by Sun Quest Executive Air Charter of Van Nuys, Calif., crashed on January 12 shortly after takeoff from Van Nuys Airport, and a cargo-carrying Learjet 24 operated by Ameristar Jet Charter of Dallas crashed on January 9 on approach to Miguel Hidalgo Airport in Guadalajara, Mexico.
