The NTSB issued an update last week on the Citation II that crashed into Lake Michigan shortly after departing General Mitchell International (MKE) in Milwaukee last month, killing all aboard. In the update, the Safety Board said a crewmember declared an emergency shortly after takeoff, with the intention of returning to MKE.

The National Air Transportation Association (NATA) said in a letter to the FAA that Safety Alert for Operators (SAFO) should not be mandatory. According to the association, language contained within the SAFOs might allow some FAA inspectors to think they are.

Business aviation experienced 25 accidents in the first six months of this year, down from 29 in the same period last year, according to data released last week by Robert Breiling Associates of Boca Raton, Fla. There were also fewer fatal accidents—eight accidents and 14 fatalities this year versus nine accidents and 23 fatalities in the same period last year.

Some 15,000 well-wishers witnessed the first public appearance of the Boeing 787 in Everett, Wash., on Sunday (07/08/07, not coincidentally), an event broadcast live via satellite in nine languages and “potentially” reaching more than 100 million people.

Private equity company The Carlyle Group, which has been steadily assembling business aviation assets in recent years, plans to add transportation communications and systems engineering specialist Arinc to its portfolio. Carlyle announced June 5 it had reached a “definitive agreement to acquire Arinc” from its current shareholders—a vast majority of which are both domestic and foreign airlines.
