By 2009, Nav Canada plans to install ADS-B ground stations around Hudson Bay, which straddles high-latitude flight paths between Asia, North America and Europe but has no radar coverage. Currently, aircraft overflying the area must observe “procedural” separations that keep them approximately 80 miles apart, compared with five miles under radar monitoring.

The FAA recently added new Safety Logic runway incursion alerting technology to its ASDE-X airport surveillance equipment at Orlando International Airport in Florida. ASDE-X combines radar scanning with a transponder tracking system to provide controllers with a real-time picture of airborne and airport surface traffic.

The FAA recently hosted representatives from key industry organizations, including the Aeronautical Repair Station Association (ARSA), to discuss aspects of new drug and alcohol testing rules pertaining to maintenance contractors and subcontractors for Part 121 and 135 operators (FAR 135.251 and 135.253).

Into an increasingly acrimonious atmosphere in which the airlines perceive business aviation as competition for high-end travelers comes a study suggesting that airline losses do not necessarily benefit business aviation. The study is from Washington, D.C.-based aviation consulting firm The Velocity Group.

Honda announced this morning at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., that it will “enter the HondaJet into the growing very light jet market.” According to project leader and vice president of Honda R&D Americas Michimasa Fujino, Honda will establish a new U.S. company to produce the over-the-wing-engine twinjet in the U.S. Honda plans to certify the GE-Honda HF118-powered HondaJet in 2009 or 2010 under FAR Part 23.
