President Obama’s 180-day moratorium on deepwater oil drilling operations in the Gulf of Mexico is beginning to pinch helicopter operators there. The President imposed the moratorium following the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig on April 20.

According to an industry source, Piaggio will announce more improvements for the P.180 Avanti twin turboprop before year-end. While the source wouldn’t discuss more details, one of the most obvious areas that Piaggio has yet to address is the Avanti’s unmistakable whine, which has led to its being the only modern turboprop banned under noise restrictions at Santa Monica (Calif.) Airport.
Without revealing specifics, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) assistant administrator John Sammon said on Tuesday at the National Air Transportation Association Air Charter Summit that his agency is hard at work on a rewrite of the Large Aircraft Security Program (LASP). The TSA met with the general aviation community “about this time last year” to gather input for the new rule, he said.
Cessna Aircraft instituted rolling furloughs on May 17 affecting up to 200 people at the company’s Independence, Kan. factory, delaying production of the Citation Mustang light jet through early August.
Hosting a record turnout of some 1,900 people, NBAA held a regional forum at Teterboro (N.J.) Airport today, with Jet Aviation devoting a hangar and much of its ramp space to hosting the 31 static-display aircraft at the New York-area gathering. There were 87 exhibitor booths at the one-day event. During the opening session, NBAA president and CEO Ed Bolen noted that 100 communities in the U.S.
Wayfarer Aviation is closing tomorrow, after having let go most of its employees earlier this week. The company was formed last year from the assets of bankrupt JetDirect Aviation, which attempted to build a nationwide charter/management company by buying nearly a dozen charter firms. However, the timing was disastrous because the complex consolidation was still under way as the economy faltered in 2008.
