The 2013 Paris Air Show–the 50th since the biennial event started in 1909–opens on Monday with its exhibitor count at a 10-year high of 2,200 companies from 44 countries. Much of the pre-show excitement this week has been built on expectations that Airbus might take the opportunity to give its new A350XWB airliner a high-profile public debut.

The FAA has released a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) that would allow many more operators to continue flying below decision altitude/decision height or minimum descent altitude (DA/DH or MDA) during IMC when equipped with enhanced flight vision systems (EFVS). Such systems generally use infrared sensors to deliver real-time images of the external view to cockpit displays, and the new rules would not apply to synthetic vision systems. Millimeter-wave radar could also be used for future EFVS operations.
Phebe Novakovic, CEO of Gulfstream parent company General Dynamics, says that Gulfstream has remedied the production/completion “disequilibrium” (her word at the time) that slowed initial deliveries of the G650. Speaking this morning at the Deutsche Bank Global Industrials and Basic Materials Conference in Chicago, she said approximately 30 copies of the airframer’s new flagship had to undergo retrofits in the completions process to comply with FAA certification requirements.
The pre-owned business jet market showed “incremental weakness” last month, according to the latest business jet monthly report from J.P.Morgan North American Equity Research. “A single month does not make a trend, but May used-market data, including a sequential increase in inventory by 0.4 percentage points and 3.6-percent decline in pricing not seen since the first half of 2009, suggest that business jet demand will remain weak,” it said.
Montreal-based business aircraft services firm Zenith Jet has revised its 10-year business jet forecast in the aftermath of the recent EBACE show. The updated prognostication now foresees delivery of 9,234 business jets worth $255 billion from 2013 to 2022, down about 1.8 percent from the 9,400 aircraft in its previous forecast released in February but $2 billion more in billings.
British Helicopter Association CEO Peter Norton has urged UK authorities to abandon plans for new restrictions on rotorcraft operations over urban areas following the January 16 accident in which an AgustaWestland A109 Power crashed in central London. The crash prompted British Prime Minister David Cameron to order a review of helicopter operating rules, and an Air Accidents Investigation Branch inquiry is in progress.
The FAA plans to make changes to some procedures for flights into three Colorado airports–Aspen, Eagle County Regional and Garfield County “Rifle”–for the 2013 to 2014 holiday season, NBAA said. Specifically, the FAA will discontinue use of a legacy air-traffic slot-reservation program for these airports during the November-through-January time frame. In lieu of the air-traffic slot-reservation program, the FAA will manage the traffic volume with other traffic management initiative tools, including miles-in-trail and ground-delay programs.
Hanscom Field in Bedford, Mass., has been recognized for outstanding achievement in airport snow removal and ice control. The general aviation facility received the Northeast Chapter of the American Association of Airports’ Balchen/Post Award, which recognizes the dedicated efforts of snow crews in maintaining airports in a safe and operational status during the winter. Hanscom Field recorded more than 69 inches of snow during the 2012 to 2013 winter season, significantly more than the airport’s average of 47 inches, and crews responded to 17 storms during that time.
Night vision solutions provider Night Flight Concepts has released an infographic to teach pilots how to properly prepare for and defend against laser strikes. “As the annual number of laser strikes on aircraft increases, the topic of laser strike readiness [for aircrew] is becoming more pressing,” the company said. Night Flight’s infographic helps arm pilot with the tools they need to “identify, prepare for and recover from laser strikes.”
UK-based business aviation caterer Bon Soirée saw the busiest weekend in its 16-year history during the last weekend in May, taking in 350-percent more orders than on an average weekend. London-area airports were busy because of the Champions League final at Wembley, the Monaco Grand Prix, the start of the spring half term and the bank holiday weekend. This resulted in a “massive uplift in orders” for catering, even outperforming the rise in demand from the opening ceremony of the London Olympics last year, Bon Soirée said.
