The Middle East Business Aviation Association (MEBAA) expanded its aviation insurance program (MAIS) to include coverage for MROs, pilots, ground handlers, refuelers, fuel sales agents and other industry stakeholders. The association launched the aviation insurance group discount program for operators at the 2011 Dubai Airshow.
In a move that could help pave the way for low-boom supersonic flight over land, NASA aeronautics researchers are presenting their work on how people on the ground perceive low sonic booms this week in Atlanta at an annual event held by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. “Lessening sonic booms is the most significant hurdle to [civil] supersonic flight,” said Peter Coen, head of the high-speed project in NASA’s aeronautics research mission directorate at the agency’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Wayne Rizzi, the owner of 20-year-old air charter broker Air Royale International, pleaded guilty yesterday to “willfully failing to pay over collected Federal Excise Taxes [FET] to the IRS.” The IRS said that from Oct. 1, 2008, through Dec. 31, 2010 Air Royale collected FET from its customers totaling $489,784, but passed on only $29,286 of this amount to the agency.
General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) president and CEO Pete Bunce briefed members of the U.S. House General Aviation Caucus today on two issues the group considers important to the future of general aviation: the Part 23 certification rewrite and reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank. Caucus co-chairs Sam Graves (R-Mo.) and John Barrow (D-Ga.) invited Bunce to participate as part of a series of briefings the caucus is holding with key government and industry leaders to raise awareness of general aviation issues.

Gulfstream Aerospace donated a G100 and other aircraft components to Savannah Technical College last week. The aircraft is a former Gulfstream Field and Airborne Support Teams (Fast) aircraft that flew technicians and parts to AOG customers. Gulfstream also donated fly-by-wire components, including manifolds and actuators, from a G650, as well as a flap assembly and fuselage panel assembly from a G450. The aircraft and components will be used as training tools in the college’s aviation programs.
Signature Flight Support signed an agreement with InterDel Aviation Services of Vancouver to become a licensed Signature Flight Support location, the companies announced today at the Canadian Business Aviation Association Convention. Signature Vancouver, located at Vancouver International Airport, is the third Canadian facility for the FBO chain. This follows an agreement signed in October between Signature and Imperial Oil of Canada that offers the former Avitat network members the opportunity to become Signature Select or licensed Signature Flight Support locations.
CAE signed an agreement with African-based Caverton Helicopters to provide training center operation services over a six-year period. The facility will be located in Lagos, Nigeria, and is scheduled to open in the middle of next year. CAE will provide “turnkey solutions” that include the start-up, maintenance and operation of the six-simulator-bay training center. When opened, the center will have AgustaWestland AW139 and Boeing 737NG full-motion simulators and two CAE Simfinity Integrated Procedures Trainers (IPTs).
