Gulfstream announced today that the second G250 flight-test aircraft, S/N 2002, successfully completed natural icing tests, bringing the super-midsize jet closer to its planned FAA and Israeli CAA certification later this year. The twinjet was flown from its home base in Tel Aviv, Israel, to Smyrna, Tenn., where it spent several weeks flying to the Great Lakes region to hunt for natural icing conditions aloft.

The pilot’s decision to attempt a go-around late in the landing roll with insufficient runway remaining caused the fatal crash of a Hawker 800A in July 2008 at Owatonna (Minn.) Degner Regional Airport, according to an NTSB final report issued last week. The two crewmembers and six passengers aboard perished in the accident, and the aircraft (N818MV) was destroyed.
“Even in a down cycle [the general aviation industry] still creates $4.9 billion in exports. Gulfstream Aerospace recently expanded its product support organization with the opening of an In-Flight Support Center, the centerpiece of which is three FlightSafety International-built flight-deck simulators that can mirror what is happening in flight.
Using the highly successful Commercial Aviation Safety Team as a template, the FAA announced yesterday that it will kick off a country-wide series of 98 safety standdowns on April 2 at the Sun ’n’ Fun Fly-in and Expo in Lakeland, Fla., to reduce the general aviation fatal accident rate by 10 percent over a 10-year period. Over the next five years, the agency will use a non-regulatory, proactive strategy by focusing on education and outreach.
