Cirrus Aircraft’s first conforming Vision SF50, dubbed “C-Zero” (C0), made its maiden flight yesterday from Duluth International Airport, where the company has its headquarters. V1–a non-conforming prototype of the all-composite SF50 single-engine jet–has been flying since July 3, 2008. C0, the first of three conforming flight-test aircraft, was assembled from production-ready drawings, tooling and manufacturing processes, according to Cirrus.
The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and FAA signed a nine-year deal late last week for the agency to provide ATC service at the EAA’s annual AirVenture airshow in Oshkosh, Wis.

Million Air held an official opening on Friday for its $15 million flagship FBO at Houston Hobby Airport, which will also serve as the company’s headquarters. On Thursday, FAA Administrator Michael Huerta named agency veteran Teri Bristol as the new COO of its Air Traffic Organization (ATO), which manages the U.S. ATC system. Bristol was most recently deputy COO and had served in an acting capacity since former COO David Grizzle left in December.
The Citation CJ3 is the latest member of Cessna’s CJ series to be upgraded with the Garmin G3000 avionics system, following the M2 (née CJ1) and CJ2+. The CJ3+’s new avionics include improved turbulence-detecting weather radar, Tcas II, advanced Taws, a wireless media server, Garmin integrated cockpit and cabin Iridium phone and Aircell high-speed Internet system, as well as ADS-B capabilities. Besides the new glass cockpit, the CJ3+ also has an all-new interior with a redesigned cabin and cockpit and new pressurization and diagnostics systems.
Bombardier delivered the first Global 6000 to be operated from Mexico to owner Aero Angeles during a ceremony at its facility in Montreal. “We are delighted to see the first Global 6000 enter service in Mexico,” said Bombardier Business Aircraft regional vice president of sales for Latin America Stephane Leroy. “Mexico and Latin America are key markets for Bombardier.” Bombardier expects to deliver more than 2,300 business jets in Latin America over the next 20 years.
In an op-ed piece, NBAA president and CEO Ed Bolen challenged the Washington Examiner’s “mischaracterization” of long-standing tax deprecation policies on the purchase of business aircraft as a “loophole.” “Some in Washington are trying to score political points by characterizing business aviation as a convenience, or even a luxury, rather than a necessary tool for competitiveness,” Bolen said. “In fact, for businesses, an aircraft is as much a necessity as a computer.
Former Butler Aviation president Thomas Comeau died on Thursday at the age of 72. His nearly 30-year career at the FBO chain started at the Boston Logan facility as a flight dispatcher in the early 1960s. Comeau worked his way up the ranks, culminating in his position as president. He left the company in 1990 and formed T.F. Comeau & Associates, an aviation fueling and FBO consultancy. In 1995 he did a stint as president of DynAir Fueling before becoming senior vice president for global sales and projects at Swissport Fueling until his retirement.
