Global business aviation flight activity grew by 4 percent last year, according to JSSI’s 2013 year-end Business Aviation Index, which tracks the number of hours that business aircraft have flown by region, industry and aircraft type. This exceeds the 2.9 percent worldwide GDP growth that the International Monetary Fund estimates for 2013, JSSI said.

The White House Fiscal Year 2015 budget, released today, yet again includes a $100-per-flight user fee for air traffic services, with exemptions for military, public and piston aircraft, as well as air ambulances, aircraft operating outside controlled airspace and Canada-to-Canada flights. According to the White House, “The revenues generated by the surcharge would be deposited into the Airport and Airway Trust Fund.

NetJets accounted for more than a third of the revenue increase at Berkshire Hathaway’s “other service” businesses last year, according to the parent company’s year-end results released on Saturday. The division, which also includes FlightSafety International and several other non-aviation companies, saw revenues climb by $821 million, to $9 billion, with NetJets’ share rising by $288 million–up 7.5 percent year-over-year–thanks to higher sales of fractional aircraft shares.

Trip support group UAS is boosting its ability to help operators across Africa with the opening of a new headquarters for the continent located in Johannesburg, South Africa. The new facility will be managed by Wynand Meyers, the Dubai-based group’s newly appointed director of business development for Africa.

Private flight club Wheels Up is offering its members guaranteed access to midsize, super-midsize and large-cabin jets via a new alliance with Jet Aviation Flight Services. Through a new program announced today, its clients will be able to book aircraft with 24 hours’ notice and at fixed occupied hourly rates. Members will have the option of buying pre-paid blocks of flight hours, in which case they will have guaranteed access to aircraft with just 10 hours’ notice.

Signature Flight Support acquired the FBO assets of the Jets facility at London Biggin Hill Airport last week. Jets will continue to operate its core business of aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul, while Signature will own and operate the FBO assets.

Honeywell chief engineer technologist for flight safety systems and technology Don Bateman received the 2013 Elmer A. Sperry Award for Enhancing the Art of Transportation yesterday. The award recognizes Bateman for his development of Honeywell’s ground-proximity warning system (GPWS), a terrain awareness and warning system that has helped reduced controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) accidents.

The new Bombardier Learjet 75 began a nearly four-week Latin America demonstration tour today. The light jet, which received FAA certification in December, will visit cities in Mexico, Panama, Colombia, Guatemala, Brazil and Chile from today through March 28. It will be on static display during Aero Expo in Toluca, Mexico, from tomorrow through Saturday and FIDAE in Santiago, Chile, from March 25 to 31.

In a follow up to the December announcement that it will purchase the Galaxy Aviation chain of FBOs, Macquarie Infrastructure subsidiary Atlantic Aviation will also acquire the related Boca Aviation facility, which was not included in the original transaction because of the location’s separate ownership considerations.

On Friday, Signature Flight Support broke ground on its 240,000-sq-ft, $82 million FBO complex at Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport in California. When completed late next year, the new Signature San José facility will serve the general aviation needs of individuals and companies in Silicon Valley. Blue City Holdings, the private aviation arm of Google’s founders, is one of the anchor tenants.
