The FAA has published two general notices revising procedures for airports conducting taxi into position and hold (TIPH) operations. Both notices, which go into effect March 20, result from continued “operational errors” (read actual or potential runway incursions).

Jeffrey Borer, former owner of defunct charter operator XtraJet, and Arvel Reeves, previous owner of one-time aircraft services firm Executive Aviation Logistics, admitted guilt in a plea bargain on federal charges of secretly videotaping entertainer Michael Jackson and his attorney while flying aboard a chartered Gulfstream IISP on Nov. 20, 2003.
As a result of the Era Aviation Sikorsky S-76++ crash, the NTSB asked the FAA to require terrain awareness and warning systems (TAWS) on all U.S.-registered turbine helicopters that are certified to carry at least six passengers.
The NTSB determined the probable causes of two helicopter accidents. In one, a sightseeing Bell 206L LongRanger that crashed into the East River in Manhattan on takeoff was found to be 222 pounds overweight. The Board blamed the Helicopter Professionals pilot’s “inadequate preflight planning” in the June 14, 2005 crash. One passenger was severely injured.
Leaders of three general aviation organizations went on the offensive yesterday in response to an Air Transport Association plan that would place a tax (read user fees) on the number of “departures” and “time in system” and give the airlines the most influence among ATC system stakeholders.
