European taxpayers will shell out €2.4 billion ($3.25 billion) up front if a European Commission proposal that it assume control of the Galileo navigation program is approved. The executive body of the European Union announced its intentions after a consortium of eight private aerospace and telecom companies missed the May 10 deadline to appoint a CEO and submit plans to operate and maintain the system as a single company.

Lockheed Martin, which took over operational control of most of the nation’s flight service network last year, is experiencing troubles with consolidation, AOPA asserts. As part of the 10-year, $1.8 billion contract, Lockheed is now in a seven-month consolidation process, during which it will merge 58 flight service stations into 16, along with three hubs.

Brazilian airframer Embraer this morning announced slightly improved first-quarter revenue over the same period last year, though reduced deliveries and continued supply chain issues resulted in a net profit decrease for the company. Net revenue for the first quarter was up 4.3 percent, to $843.4 million, compared to $808.3 million a year ago. Increased production costs ate into profit, which fell from $231.9 million to $216.3 million.

NBAA, the Flight Safety Foundation (FSF) and the International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations (IFALPA) heavily criticized a decision by Brazilian police investigators to recommend criminal prosecutions of ExcelAire pilots Joseph Lepore and Jan Paladino in connection with last September’s midair between a Gol Airlines Boeing 737 and Embraer Legacy over the Amazon jungle.
