At least one exhibitor feels the event has become the show of choice, saying, “Collectively there are more real buyers here than at [the annual] NBAA [convention in the U.S.].” There’s no doubt the show has grown exponentially over the seven years of its existence. Phase One of a proposal by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to improve airspace capacity will require aircraft owners in the UK to upgrade to a Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR) Mode-S transponder by March 31, 2012. In addition, all new installations of SSR transponders must be Mode-S compliant beyond March 31 next year.
The FAA said yesterday it will greatly expand the airspace flow program (AFP) this summer, an initiative implemented last summer as a better way to manage airline delays associated with summer thunderstorms. In all, seven combinations were available for use last year, mainly to meter the flow of traffic to the Northeast. This year operators can expect 18 separate geographic possibilities when the program expands to the Midwest.
In a public debate Tuesday at the Washington Aero Club’s monthly luncheon, AOPA president Phil Boyer and ATA president and CEO James May agreed on many issues related to funding the FAA, with May going so far as to say he would be fine with no user fees. “I’ve never allocated a collection formula,” he said.
