The first test flights of a Cessna Citation X equipped with Winglet Technology’s new elliptical winglets are proceeding well, according to Bob Kiser, president of the Wichita-based modification kit manufacturer. The winglets are expected to give the airplane an even higher maximum cruise speed at high altitude as well as improved climb performance and longer range.

Airport encroachment and land use might be the next big issue beyond user fees, AOPA vice president of airports Bill Dunn said last week at the American Association of Airport Executives General Aviation Issues Conference in Naples, Fla. For good or bad, "development always follows airports," he added.

The FAA said yesterday that it exceeded its goal for reducing the 'most serious' runway incursions by 25 percent in Fiscal Year 2007, which ended September 30. According to the agency, there were 24 serious runway incursions this past year out of more than 61 million operations, or one for every 2.545 million operations, exceeding the agency's goal of no more than one incursion for every two million surface movements.

Relenting to mounting public and congressional pressure, NASA Administrator Michael Griffin reversed course and announced yesterday that his agency would indeed release the results from the National Aviation Operations Monitoring Service (NAOMS) project, an $11.3 million aviation safety survey.

Eclipse Aviation yesterday released more information about its planned flight operational quality assurance (FOQA) program, which was recently approved by the FAA though the company didn't reveal the regulatory basis of the approval. The FOQA program will gather data from Eclipse 500s for analysis by Austin Digital, a software company that works with many FOQA equipment manufacturers and airlines.

Gulfstream Aerospace's announcement yesterday of four new directors at its Savannah, Ga. headquarters hints at design elements for the widely expected G600, which is thought to be a composite-fuselage, long-range widebody business twinjet. Gulfstream has repeatedly denied such speculation, and a spokesman today maintained there officially is no G600 model, even though the company holds trademarks for this model name, the G625 and G675.
