Deer Jet, Asia’s largest business jet operator, is gradually transforming from a regional operator to a global one as it approaches its 20th anniversary. The Beijing-based company now has a fleet of 85 aircraft, based not only in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, but also in the U.S., Dubai and Moscow. According to Zhang Peng, who was promoted to president of the company in August, Deer Jet’s international flight operations have increased by 80 percent over 2013, now up to 6,800 annual flight hours to more than 300 airports worldwide.

Securaplane has grouped its lithium-ion battery technology under the “System Lithium” brand. Typically, such batteries weigh about half the weight of a traditional sealed lead-acid or nickel-cadmium battery, and in a large aircraft can save up to 200 pounds. Rather than being a single, sealed unit, the company’s lithium-iron phosphate batteries typically comprise clusters of low-power, smartphone-style cells packaged in a unit with advanced electronic cell management and health monitoring, with each cell surrounded by several layers of short-circuit protection.
Lighting specialist Luma Technologies introduced two new products aimed at the Beechcraft King Air family. Having developed its Lumatech series of LED-based caution/warning annunciator panels to meet the needs of 200- and 300-series King Airs, Luma has introduced a 45-station variant for the King Air C90. In conjunction with the Lumatech series, the company has also developed LED-based glareshield floodlights. The lights are available with three- or five-light bar assemblies that can “daisy-chain” using simple connectors and plug into existing power and control connections.
RocketRoute and Aircraft Performance Group (APG) have partnered to offer APG’s runway performance data as part of the RocketRoute flight-planning system. APG has been providing aircraft takeoff/landing and engine-out performance data since 1999. By adding APG data to the RocketRoute system, detailed runway analysis can be accessed directly on the flightdeck, which is especially useful when operating to and from short fields and those at high altitudes. APG’s data also provides tailored engine-out procedures and allows in-flight appraisal of potential diversion airfields.
Winglet Technology has completed testing its new elliptical winglets on the Cessna Citation Sovereign. It is collaborating with the Citation service center network on the project and released test results for the $395,000 kit (uninstalled) today at NBAA 2014. Speed increases by 12 to 14 knots at FL450, time-to-climb direct to FL450 drops to 26 minutes and range increases by 265 nm with payloads over 1,450 pounds. FAA certification is pending. The company’s elliptical winglets for the Citation X were approved by the FAA in 2009.
FAA deputy associate administrator John Hickey handed Embraer Executive Jets president Marco Túlio Pellegrini the FAA type certificate for the fly-by-wire Legacy 500 this afternoon at the NBAA Convention in Orlando, Fla. The U.S. approval comes just two months after the super-midsize jet earned authorization from Brazil’s civil aviation authority.
Safe Flight Instrument of White Plains, N.Y., has developed an aircraft-based icing conditions detector (ICD) system using a combination of optical detection and a shielded temperature probe. The optical system uses an LED, a prism and an infrared sensor to detect the presence of moisture in the air.
The CEO of oil giant Total, Christophe de Margerie, was killed in the crash of a Dassault Falcon 50EX business jet at Moscow Vnukovo airport last night. The three crewmembers aboard also perished in the accident. The Falcon, registered as F-GLSA, was operated by Le Bourget-based Unijet, part of the Luxaviation group.
Business aircraft activity in the U.S. has been climbing for the past 10 straight months and is set to continue this trend in the fourth quarter, according to aviation services company Argus. In fact, the company is predicting that flying in the quarter will rise 0.7 percent year-over-year, which would result in this year besting 2013 by 1.5 percent and making 2014 the “most robust” year for flight activity since 2008.
The NTSB today concluded its investigation into the Feb. 20, 2013, attempted go-around crash of a Premier 390 that killed all five passengers and injured the pilot and copilot.
