Chicago Jet Group received the first-ever Fans retrofit STC approval from the FAA on September 5, the company and partner Universal Avionics announced yesterday. The Fans 1/A+/controller-pilot datalink communications (CPDLC) system, which was installed in a Dassault Falcon 50 that Chicago Jet group manages for a customer, uses an International Communications Group NxtLink ICS-220A Iridium satcom.

Stop-gap legislation enacted in late May enabled the FAA to abandon its budget-trimming plan–prompted by sequestration cuts imposed by Congress–to close the 149 contract air traffic control towers starting on June 15. However, the agency left open the possibility that the towers could be closed when the new fiscal year starts on October 1, which is now just two weeks away.
The managing director of Aerojet Corporate–the Lyon, France-based executive charter operator caught with 1,500 pounds of cocaine aboard a Falcon 50 in March in the Dominican Republic–has been imprisoned. Pierre Dreyfus and a freelance pilot, Fabrice Alcaud, are now jailed in France, according to Lyon daily newspaper Le Progrès.
A new quarterly index that tracks business aircraft flying hours from Jet Support Services (JSSI) shows “relatively flat” year-over-year flight-hour growth of about 1 percent in the second quarter, according to data that the hourly-cost maintenance provider released last week. Quarter-over-quarter, though, business aircraft flying climbed by a “more promising” 3 percent.
The new Sikorsky S-76D medium twin recently performed high-altitude takeoff and landing tests at Colorado’s Lake County Airport, the helicopter manufacturer announced last week. The trials, which took place at almost 10,000 feet msl, were part of a so-called envelope-expansion program.
Jet Aviation relocated its FBO at Zurich International Airport to a new building adjacent to the existing General Aviation Center. It has been rebranded with the new corporate look and feel unveiled earlier this year at Jet Aviation’s FBO in Geneva. The new Zurich FBO now has a separate entrance with a reception area and customer lounge, as well as a “spacious” customs and immigration area. An expanded crew lounge with a snooze room at the Zurich facility will be completed in November, Jet Aviation said.
FreeFlight Systems has interfaced its Model 1201 Waas/GPS sensor with the Garmin GTX 330 mode-S transponder to provide an additional 1090-MHz extended-squitter ADS-B Out upgrade solution for GTX 330 owners. The upgrade solution gives aircraft owners more ADS-B Out equipage choices, depending on their aircraft type, existing avionics and flying requirements. It also ensures compliance with the FAA’s Jan.
Cessna Aircraft and Bell Helicopter both contributed to the design and development of parent company Textron’s new Scorpion military jet, which was unveiled yesterday. According to a Textron spokesman, Bell brought composite expertise to the project, while Cessna designed and built the jet at its Pawnee facility in Wichita. A nearly completed prototype, which has been fitted with a pair of Honeywell TFE731 turbofans, is expected to fly by year-end.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Learjet 23’s first flight this October 7, Flexjet launched a six-city U.S. tour dubbed “Legends Redefined.” The showcase features a Learjet 85 mockup, as well as products from other legendary brands, including Aston Martin, Scotch whisky maker Royal Salute and Napa Valley-based Ackerman Family Vineyards. Eurocopter has issued another emergency Service Bulletin and the EASA has published another emergency Airworthiness Directive for the EC225 and AS332L2 Super Pumas, this time centering on a life-raft housing. During an EC225 delivery flight, a sponson life-raft ejectable cowling was lost. It was caused by the incorrect positioning of a locking system during cowling installation. This condition, if not detected and corrected, could lead to the in-flight hazardous inflation of the life raft, according to the EASA.
