Garmin flew a Beechjet 400A with a G5000 integrated flight deck for the first time on September 16 at New Century AirCenter near the company’s Olathe, Kan. headquarters, the avionics maker announced yesterday. The successful 63-minute flight marked a “significant step” towards completion of the Garmin G5000 upgrade for the Beechjet 400A/400XP.

The British Business and General Aviation Association (BBGA) is opposing further increases to the UK’s air passenger duty (APD) tax that would steeply raise fees for business aircraft passengers. Though the proposed changes would simplify and reduce charges for scheduled airline passengers, the association charges that business aviation was “specifically targeted” to pay more.

A German photographer spotted a modified EC135 at Airbus Helicopters’ development facility in Donauwörth, Germany. Most striking is the light twin’s new horizontal empennage, moved to the top of the vertical fin.

The comment deadline has been extended 90 days, from October 8 to January 6, on a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) published in July that seeks to amend qualification standards for some flight simulation training devices (FSTDs), specifically those capable of reproducing extended flight envelope and adverse weather training.

Airbus Brazilian subsidiary Helibras recently held its second “Operational Safety Days,” filling São Paulo’s Anhembi Morumbi University auditorium to its 300-seat capacity. “We’ll need a bigger place next year,” Helibras safety manager Antonio Modesto told AIN, describing the helicopter safety event as “the realization of a personal dream” with full company support.

Donated auction items for the NBAA/Corporate Angel Network (CAN) Soirée, An Evening with Angels, are starting to flow in. Proceeds from the auction benefit CAN, which arranges flights to treatment centers for cancer patients aboard business aircraft. The Soirée, held annually during the NBAA Convention, will take place at 6 p.m. on October 22 at the Hyatt Regency in Orlando, Fla.

Delta Private Jets continues to see “record growth” for charter and jet card travel, the company announced this week. In fact, it recorded a 76-percent, year-over-year increase in jet card sales last month. This follows record growth in both June and July, “with September on track for similar activity.” As demand increases, Delta Private Jets said it is able to add popular business aircraft models via its “unique” aircraft management programs–one of which offers aircraft owners a guaranteed monthly income stream–to meet customers’ needs and spur additional growth.

Russian Helicopters and Concern Radio-Electronic Technologies have started testing the Mi-171A2 helicopter with KBO-17 avionics. The first flights of the upgraded Mi-171 will take place in Moscow. The medium-twin helicopter features a five-display suite and an obstacle warning system. With the new system, the required crew is reduced to two. Certification, once slated for this year, has been postponed to 2015.

Teterboro (N.J.) Airport-based FBO/MRO and aircraft charter and management firm Meridian tapped Greg Johnson as director of business development. Johnson has 15 years of business aviation experience in strategic planning, operations, aircraft management, acquisition/sales and marketing. In his new role, he will be responsible for overseeing the development of a new Meridian FBO to be built at Hayward (Calif.) Executive Airport, as well as expanding the company’s aircraft management business on the West Coast. Johnson previously worked for TWC Aviation in San Jose, Calif.

The National Aircraft Resale Association (NARA) will present a panel discussion, “Current Trends Impacting Business Aircraft Sales,” at the NBAA Convention next month in Orlando, Fla. The session, to be held on October 22 at 3 p.m., will cover current trends and recent changes affecting new and used aircraft sales, including technology changes, aircraft values, financing and regulations. The 1.5-hour session will be moderated by Brad Harris, NARA chairman and president of Dallas Jet International.
