The FAA is seeking comments on a proposed legal interpretation of Airworthiness Directive (AD) regulations. The interpretation comes from the FAA’s Organization/Procedures Working Group of the Airworthiness Directive Implementation Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC). Issues identified by the ARC are mostly a result of the FAA’s 2002 plain-language revision of 14 CFR Part 39, which governs the AD process.

Finally, after several years of friction between organizations competing to represent aircraft technicians, the key players seem to have put the past behind them. In a recent meeting, representatives of the AMTSociety, the NBAA Maintenance Committee and the Professional Aviation Maintenance Association (PAMA) agreed to work cooperatively in the future.

In a three-month-long test conducted by the U.S. Army Aviation Training Center at Fort Eustis, 18 common mechanic’s tools were replaced by automatic-locking Link tools. Army instructors reported that, depending upon the type of task, during the testing period there was a 25- to 50-percent reduction in task duration.

Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP) and GE have collaborated on a facility to train technicians on GE engines, including the GE90, CF6, CF34 and GEnx. QSTP is located in Qatar Foundation’s Education City, which was developed as a campus to bring together research and business. According to a GE spokeswoman it is the first GE facility of its kind outside North America.

Gulfstream has expanded its airborne product support program, with a second G100 and three additional pilots and two technicians to support AOG customers. Gulfstream introduced its airborne aircraft maintenance and support program in May 2002 and makes dedicated aircraft available 24/7 to deliver flight-essential parts or technicians to customers whose aircraft are under warranty in North America and the Caribbean.
