It is a common perception among operators and maintenance facilities that trying to get approval criteria from the FAA for just about anything is a moving target that varies from region to region and even among inspectors. “Shopping around” to get the answer you want to hear has been common for as long as anyone can remember. Loosely defined criteria can present a serious safety hazard, and it’s widely recognized that they are a significant waste of time and money for both the applicant and the FAA.

Dallas Aeronautical Services (DAS) recently began construction of a $3 million, 50,400-sq-ft facility on three acres in the High Meadows Industrial Park, Cedar Hill, Texas. The new facility is expected to open in next year’s first quarter.
The company currently overhauls and repairs all the components in a leased five-building, 22,500-sq-ft complex.
Helicopter MRO Vector Aerospace Helicopter Services North America (HSNA), a subsidiary of Vector Aerospace, has signed a five-year agreement with Era Helicopters to repair and overhaul dynamic components for Era’s Sikorsky S-76 and Eurocopter AS350 fleets.
Under the terms of the five-year agreement, HSNA will provide Era with inspection, repair, overhaul, testing, modification and other services, including on-site rental assets for Era’s S-76 and AS350 fleets.
Duncan Aviation has selected Houston-based AV8 MRO as its preferred provider for the repair and overhaul of all Hawker landing gear.
“This agreement allows Duncan Aviation to take advantage of our complete in-house repair and overhaul capabilities, while also giving them the opportunity to offer an overhaul exchange program to their customers,” said Yoel Arnoni, one of the MRO’s principals.
Lufthansa Technik (LHT), in conjunction with the Fiber Force research project, has developed methods for load transmission into carbon fiber composite (CFC) aircraft fuselage structures.
Aerospace Products International of Memphis, Tenn., has acquired the assets of Avionics International Supply (AIS), expanding its distribution product line into avionics and electronics. Headquartered in Denton, Texas, AIS is a wholesale distribution and repair services company with a focus on the procurement and sales of new and used parts and supplies, avionics, electronics, tooling and test equipment, along with other supplementary services and programs to support aircraft repair facilities.
Bombardier has launched a free Proximity App for its business aircraft customers. It’s available from the Apple App Store and provides users with instant access to Bombardier’s support team on their iPad and iPhone. “Each day, our worldwide team works hand in hand with Bombardier aircraft operators to ensure they reach optimal dispatch availability,” Andy Nureddin, Bombardier Business Aircraft vice president for customer services and support, told AIN.
Business Jet Access has added Jerry Tindel Jr. and David Garvey to its maintenance staff. Tindel assumes the position of maintenance supervisor and will oversee operations at the BJA Dallas Love Field maintenance facility. He began his career in the Air Force and his 30 years in business aviation maintenance include positions as lead technician for Falcon and Gulfstream aircraft. As supply chain manager, Garvey will manage all areas of materials and supply-chain logistics for the company.
The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive for certain Bombardier CL600-2B16s (CL601-3A, CL601-3R, and CL604 variants). It was prompted by reports of airspeed mismatch between the pilot’s and copilot’s airspeed indicators during or after heavy rain. The AD requires inspecting for drain bottles having certain part numbers and replacing affected drain bottles.
An airworthiness directive for the Eurocopter AS332C, AS332L, AS332L1, AS332L2 and EC225LP requires inspecting the intermediate gearbox (IGB) fairing for a crack and inspecting the IGB fairing gutter for a crack, separation or interference. The AD was prompted by reports of cracks, separation of the IGB fairing from the gutter and attachment supports, and subsequent interference with the tail-rotor inclined drive shaft, which could result in subsequent loss of control of the helicopter.
