A Royal Air Freight Learjet 35 crashed into a river in a forest preserve on Tuesday afternoon while on approach to Chicago Executive Airport in Wheeling, Ill. The cargo-configured twinjet, N720RA, was destroyed when it went down about one mile from the airport, killing both the pilot and copilot. According to investigators, the crew was performing a circling approach to Runway 34 when the accident occurred.

According to UBS Investment Research’s latest business jet update, flight activity in November was roughly unchanged from the same period in 2008, stemming the year-over-year declines seen in each of the previous 24 months. On a seasonally adjusted basis, cycles were roughly 1 percent higher from October and are now 18 percent above their March low, though still 23 percent below the 2007 peak.

As flight activity last year declined from that of the previous year, so too did the number of U.S. business aircraft accidents, according to year-end statistics released yesterday by Boca Raton, Fla.-based industry safety analyst Robert E. Breiling Associates. In the business jet category, the total number of accidents for U.S.-registered aircraft saw a dramatic decline, from 23 in 2008 to eight in 2009.

Twin Commander Aircraft completed its relocation from Arlington, Wash., to Creedmoor, N.C. The company moved to capitalize on North Carolina’s increasing status as an eastern hub for aerospace manufacturing activity. Twin Commander Aircraft was acquired by Firstmark, and Creedmoor (located approximately 20 miles north of Raleigh) is the site of Firstmark’s 70,000-sq-ft operations center, according to Twin Commander president Matt Isley.
