Nearly 90 percent of the UK public would be concerned about flying with a pilot who had been awake for an extended period of time, according to a survey conducted for the British Air Line Pilots Association (Balpa). The survey asked 2,052 people in the country over the age of 18 one important question related to pilot fatigue: “How concerned…would you be for your safety if you were on board an aircraft being flown by a pilot who had been awake for…[22 hours]?”

Surviving the impact of an emergency ditching is not the only risk facing helicopter crews flying over water. They also face the chaos of safely exiting an aircraft that may be sinking or submerged.
Night Flight Concepts and Bolo3 Group have organized underwater egress training for helicopter crews, with a special emphasis on those operating with night vision goggles (NVG). The class uses real-world scenarios and preparedness training to reinforce the tactics necessary to survive after hitting the water.
A newly updated FAA draft advisory circular AC 20-151B provides flight departments with fresh guidance necessary in obtaining airworthiness approval for traffic alert collision avoidance systems II (Tcas II), as well as for certification of a stand-alone mode-S transponder system.
The FAA is seeking responses to a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) that it believes will significantly improve operational flexibility for operators using an enhanced flight vision system (EFVS). Comments on FAA-2013-0485 are due by September 9.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has restricted takeoff and landing weight for all international airlines flying widebodies to Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) to 196 metric tons (432,102 pounds) through September 30. The decision is a result of safety concerns following repeated cracks on the 46-year-old runway.
Amid calls for the grounding of Eurocopter Super Puma helicopters in the wake of the August 23 crash of an AS332L2 in the North Sea, the British Air Line Pilots Association (Balpa) has asked all operators of the Super Puma line to wait until the cause of has been positively determined before taking any action. The pilots’ union said its members still strongly support the aircraft. The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department told AIN it has no plans to ground its three AS332L1s.
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents confiscated 33 handguns at airports all over the U.S. in the week ending August 23, the agency reported. Thirty of the 33 handguns were loaded when they were discovered. The TSA also confiscated eight stun guns and five large knives in the same week.
The control tower manager at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (KORD) published an airport notice effective August 19 that reminds pilots of locations where tower controllers are unable to see their aircraft after a “line up and wait” instruction is issued. These include the intersections of Runway 10L and Taxiway DD, Runway 32L and Taxiway T10, Runway 14L and Taxiway U2 and Runway 28R and Taxiway EE.
Federal officials, as well as Maine state police officers, are still trying to locate the person or people using a portable transceiver to jam the Unicom frequency at Central Maine Airport of Norridgewock (KOWK), 27 miles north of Augusta. The interference began about two weeks ago. Federal officials believe someone is deliberately holding down the transmit key on the portable transceiver, effectively blocking radio communications for nearby aircraft.
A cellphone video captured the August 24 crash of a small drone into a grandstand at the Virginia Motorsports Park during the park’s recent Great Bull Run event. Four people in the stands received minor injuries. The drone was hovering above the crowd, capturing the event on video. So far, investigators have not traced the person responsible for controlling the aircraft or the reason for the crash.
