Satcom Direct, a satcom service provider based in Florida, has introduced a new service called Aero X that the company claims will provide significant increases in Swift64 data rates. Using Satcom Direct’s proprietary compression algorithms and EMS Satcom’s Cabin Network Accelerator hardware, Aero X can achieve data speeds of up to 500 kilobytes to one megabyte per second, the company said.

The FAA has completed the first round of flight testing of a unique traffic collision avoidance system that combines automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) technology and traffic information service (TIS) avionics through a sophisticated network the agency describes as an “integrated airborne Internet.”

Duncan Aviation has installed and certified the Universal Avionics EFI-890R retrofit avionics system in a King Air 300, the Battle Creek, Mich. company reported. The STC for the package covers two- and three-display systems, with Universal’s large-format 8.9-inch active matrix LCD screens serving as the centerpiece for the upgrade. This particular installation, completed last month, included three displays.

In a cost-cutting move, the FAA last month decommissioned 216 NDB approaches across the U.S. Although the agency has yet to actually switch the NDB beacons off the air, the decommissioned stations will no longer be flight-checked, maintained, approved for use or shown on updated charts, according to AOPA.
