Mitsubishi MU-2, Fort Pierce, Fla., June 25, 2006–The pilot of MU-2 N316PR was killed when the airplane crashed shortly after takeoff from Saint Lucie County Airport (FPR) in Fort Pierce in VMC. The ferry flight was on an IFR flight plan to Murfreesboro, Tenn., to have scheduled 100-hour maintenance performed. The airplane was destroyed. The pilot had flown passengers to the Bahamas and returned to the U.S.

Excel-Jet Sport-Jet, Colorado Springs, Colo., June 23, 2006–Pilot James Stewart and mechanic John Welty were seriously injured when the prototype Sport-Jet crashed on takeoff from Colorado Springs Municipal Airport (COS). According to reports from the COS Tower, the VLJ single took off from Runway 17R and became airborne only momentarily before crashing.

Pilatus PC-12, Big Timber, Mont., June 25, 2006–PC-12 N768H crashed shortly after takeoff from Big Timber Airport (6S0) and the two people on board were killed. The ATP-rated pilot was giving instruction to the private pilot when they announced on the common traffic advisory frequency that they were going to simulate an engine failure after taking off from Runway 6.

Landmark Aviation completed a $300,000 upgrade of its Dulles International Airport FBO interior in June, marking another in the FBO chain’s series of new flagship operations. Included in the upgrade is a quieter interior, easier viewing of the ramp from inside the FBO, additional plush seating in the main lounge and a new hearth fireplace. The pilots’ lounge was moved to the rear of the facility and the weather room to the front.

Mercury Air Centers opened its new FBO terminal at Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport (PHF) on June 7, with new general manager Mike Agee at the helm. The 8,000-sq-ft, one-floor facility is representative of typical Mercury Air Centers facilities, according to company owner Kenn Ricci.

In mid-June, longtime Houston Hobby FBO Enterprise Jet Center opened a new 300,000-sq-ft FBO facility fronted by a 10,000-sq-ft canopy large enough to fit Gulfstream Vs and Global Expresses. The 85,000 sq ft of clear-span hangar space is filling quickly, according to sales and marketing director Heather Hardwick, and about 60 percent of the available office space is already leased.

Self-described as “America’s Fuel Stop,” Flower Aviation at Salina Municipal Airport in Kansas held a grand opening for its new customer service center on July 10. The FBO spent $800,000 building the 5,000-sq-ft facility, which welcomes pilots stopping for Flower’s quick turns and free steaks.

The Million Air FBO at Lakefront Airport in New Orleans reopened the historic 1930s-era art deco Moffett hangar, following repairs of damage sustained during Hurricane Katrina. Compared with the rest of the airport, the hangar suffered little damage due to its unusual design. The hangar roof is made of concrete panels, a few of which fell in during the storm and had to be replicated.

Aeros Aviation, which owns completion and refurb shop McKinney Aerospace, is building a new corporate hangar at Collin County Regional Airport in McKinney, Texas, north of Dallas. The hangar will enclose 12,500 sq ft, and another 5,000 sq ft of office space will be available for corporate flight department and charter tenants.
