The FAA will prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) for implementation of several proposed improvements to San Antonio International Airport (SAT). The agency will review such major projects as extending Runway 3/21 by 1,500 feet to approximately 9,000 feet, upgrading Runway 12L/30R to approximately 8,500 feet by 150 feet and installing an ILS.

Independent fuel supplier Avfuel announced last month that Bellingham Fuel Service at Bellingham International Airport (BLI), Wash., has joined its expanding roster of dealers.
Ronson Aviation has announced plans for a new hangar and office complex to complement its existing 52,200-sq-ft facility at the Trenton Mercer Airport (TTN), N.J. Louis Aronson II, president and CEO, said, “We are pleased that despite a challenging economy, Ronson Aviation continues to enjoy steady growth from corporations and private pilots who appreciate the convenience and efficiency offered by our Trenton, New Jersey location.”
Construction has begun on a $5.5 million upgrade at Atlantic Aviation’s facilities at Chicago Midway (MDW). The project includes new construction of a 20,000-sq-ft hangar, a 10,000-sq-ft combined office and shop building and a 7,000-sq-ft ground-support building. There will also be a 3,500-sq-ft addition made to an existing building for extra shop space.
The FAA has approved most elements of the noise-compatibility program (NCP) for Martin County Airport/Witham Field (SUA) in Stuart, Fla. Approved components include preferential use of Runway 12 during calm winds, voluntary use of straight-out departure track for jets departing from Runway 12, a voluntary left turn to 285 degrees for jets departing Runway 30, a ban on Stage 1 aircraft and a voluntary Stage 2 nighttime curfew between 10 p.m.
“We’re one of the best-kept secrets in the Southampton area,” said New York Jet corporate services manager Lindsay Durand. Founded as Mid Island Air Service in 1946 by World War II veteran Louis Mancuso, New York Jet began servicing corporate aircraft in 1987 at Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP) in Islip, N.Y. “Commitment to excellence is the backbone of New York Jet’s success,” said Durand.
Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) in Vail, Colo., recently dedicated a new ATC tower, resulting from the efforts of Eagle County, the Colorado Division of Aeronautics and the FAA. Construction of the new tower, made possible in part by the FAA’s AIR-21 program, will support expanded airport operations that include five scheduled carriers at the terminal and customs clearance for international travelers.
A public hearing was held at Jackson Hole, Wyo., on March 17 to address the airport’s intention to ban operations by all Stage 2 aircraft with an mtow of less than 75,000 pounds. If the ban is adopted, willful violations could be punishable by a fine of up to $750 and one year in prison for each violation.
Canadian firm Heli-Lynx Helicopter Services launched the TwinStar 355FX mod at Heli-Expo last month. The program, which has received Transport Canada approval and was awaiting FAA certification at press time, essentially modifies an IFR Eurocopter AS 355F2 TwinStar into a twin-engine version of the VFR AS 350 AStar.
An impasse in negotiations by unionized workers and the Dassault Falcon Jet Wilmington, Del. facility remained unresolved at press time, leaving some 100 workers on strike. Contract negotiations broke down between the company and United Auto Workers Local 1542 on March 8, but they were scheduled to reopen on March 23 (for the latest, see “As We Go To Press” on page 3).
