Embraer this spring expects to complete certification that will increase the service ceiling of the Legacy business jet from FL370 to FL410. Later this year, Embraer will introduce an optional Chelton data system that will boost the Legacy’s high-speed connectivity from the current 128 kbps to 432 kbps. A new cabin LED lighting system and pleated mechanical window shades are also scheduled to be integrated into the Legacy later this year.

Avantair, the fractional operator flying an all-Piaggio Avanti fleet, took delivery last month of its 16th copy of the Italian-built twin-turboprop pusher. The Fairfield, N.J., company said it will continue to receive one Avanti per month through 2007, which will bring the planned fleet to nearly 50 aircraft by the end of that year. At press time the number of Avantair share-owners stood at 132.
Concerned by its findings between 1998 and 2003 involving airline pilots, the FAA late last year proposed to amend airman medical standards so that a refusal to submit to a required drug or alcohol test would result in revocation or disqualification of an airman medical certificate. Only about 20 comments were submitted.
Effective March 15, Signature Flight Support increased handling fees at its chain of more than 40 U.S. FBO locations. Signature said, “Customers who purchase two or more times the specified minimum fuel volume for their aircraft type at any U.S. Signature location will receive a 100-percent waiver of handling fees at all other U.S. Signature FBOs visited on the same day of their fuel purchase.”
Construction is complete on a new terminal at Guardian Jet Center at Ontario International Airport, Calif.
Swissport Executive Aviation has opened a business aircraft handling operation at Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The Kenyan operation is the Swiss group’s third business aviation facility in Africa, with bases already having been established in South Africa and Tanzania with its local partner DAHCO.
Several of FlightSafety International’s facilities in Europe, Canada and South America have received approval from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to provide a fingerprinting service for foreign pilot flight-training candidates. A number of U.S.-based FSI facilities also have this approval. After an approved non-U.S.
Raytheon Aircraft last month reached a “tentative agreement” for NetJets to purchase up to 50 Hawker Horizons for its fractional aircraft fleet. The deal is expected to be finalized before the end of this month. In mid-2003, NetJets canceled a 1999 order for 50 Horizons due to “developmental and certification delays.” Full certification of the Hawker Horizon is still not expected until around midyear.
An NTSB proposal to add to the list of events that must be reported as an accident or incident is getting little support from the industry.
Indigo tried it and failed. Now Executive Jet Management (EJM), a NetJets company, is hoping to succeed in offering a scheduled air service using a fleet of business aircraft.
