The FAA has issued a series of ADs aimed at operators of airplanes equipped with the Honeywell Primus Epic avionics system. The directives–which affect EASy-equipped Dassault Falcon 900EXs and 2000EXs, Planeview-equipped Gulfstreams and the Embraer 170–call for integrity checks of the aviation standard communications bus (ASCB) and the installation of avionics software updates.

Japanese manufacturing giant Matsushita, the company behind the Panasonic brand, announced a name change for its cabin electronics division effective April 1. Matsushita Avionics Systems becomes Panasonic Avionics, according to the company, which said it made the swap because of the strong brand recognition of Panasonic throughout the world.
Arinc Direct announced it is now delivering westbound oceanic clearances via datalink on North Atlantic routes. Westbound clearance delivery is available to business airplanes equipped with the Teledyne Telelink RMU (radio management unit) or Universal Avionics Unilink CMU (communications management unit), which are compliant with the Arinc 623 standard.
The biggest question remaining about Europe’s homegrown satellite navigation project appears to be not whether the satnav network will ever be built but rather who will run the multibillion-dollar Galileo system after the first of its 30 satellites are launched later this year.
In his annual letter to shareholders published early last month, investment mogul Warren Buffett said earnings improved last year at Berkshire Hathaway’s flight services division, which includes FlightSafety International (FSI) and NetJets. Last year the unit saw its pre-tax profits rise to $191 million on revenues of $3.24 billion, up substantially from the previous year’s $72 million profit on revenues of $2.43 billion.
Last month Cessna said it had begun production line flow of its new Citation CJ2+ and would soon start production of the Citation CJ1+. On February 11, the first Citation CJ2+ (S/N 525A-000300) began its journey down the production line. This twinjet will be used to certify the avionics for the CJ2+.
On March 10 Sino Swearingen received from the FAA type inspection authorizations (TIA) for systems and high-speed upsets. TIA authorization for the FAA certification process is the approval from the FAA to move to the next phase of testing for the items passed.
Aviation Technology Group of Englewood, Colo., said last month that the Javelin demonstrator prototype is undergoing final assembly at ATG’s research and development facilities in Englewood.
Along with other industries, the aviation industry will face mounting costs if it fails
to deal with the problem of obsolescent components. According to newly published research, the cost of providing replacement components for long-lifespan equipment could be more than $500,000 per item if a major component redesign is required.
L-3 Avisys is offering business aircraft operators a missile protection system based on the Widebody Integrated Platform Protection System (WIPPS) that it installed on an Airbus A340 last year for a Middle Eastern head-of-state customer.
