BBA Aviation, the UK-based parent company of FBO network Signature Flight Support, released its preliminary annual report for last year and the results are positive. Signature augmented its portfolio by adding three bases–in California, Florida and at Paris Le Bourget. According to the company, continued investment in the quality and capacity of its FBOs will position it well to support the growing demand for business jet facilities.

At the United Nations headquarters in New York City last month, supporters of Project Orbis gathered to celebrate 25 years of saving and restoring sight worldwide and to honor the leaders, doctors and donors who have made the project possible.
The ranks of small business jets are about to swell with the imminent buildup of new sub-10,000-pound jets certified to FAA Part 23 regulations. Priced from $1.5 to $4.5 million, these jets include the newly certified Cessna Mustang and Eclipse 500, and the in-development Adam A700, HondaJet and Embraer Phenom 100.
Following a “long and successful” relationship between the two companies, the von Essen Group acquired UK business aviation charter operator PremiAir Aviation Group last month. PremiAir already manages von Essen’s helicopter and business jet fleet, as well as London’s only commercial heliport at Battersea, which von Essen purchased for about $95 million in February.
For a pilot, there are many ways to describe heroism; risking one’s health and possibly career to alleviate the suffering of another certainly ranks among the definitions. Dale Hofstetter, 49, a corporate pilot for St. Louis-based Monsanto, did just that in January when he donated a kidney to the son of one of the company’s flight administration staff.
Business aviation is expected to feature prominently in the new-format Asian Aerospace, to be held for the first time in Hong Kong from September 3 through 6. Among the industry players that have committed to the event so far are Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Pilatus and Sikorsky, as well as service providers Jet Aviation and Lufthansa Technik.
Spurred by the popularity of Bombardier’s blockbuster annual standdown in Wichita, safety stand- downs are becoming regional one- day events. The Greater Washington Business Aviation Association recently hosted its own one-day safety and security standdown at Signature Flight Support’s FBO at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
Spain traditionally has lagged in Europe’s business aviation market. Although its fleet of around 80 jets and 42 turboprops for corporate or private use is the continent’s fifth biggest, Gruppo Gestair, Europe’s third largest operator, dominates and Spain commands only about 3 percent of the continent’s market.
Can an airline ever realistically hope to match the level of service and intimate environment a private jet offers? Silverjet Aviation thinks it can, and in January it launched what it calls Silver Service between London and New York with a dramatically modified Boeing 767-200. It might not be a private jet, but in terms of cabin comfort and amenities, it isn’t far from it, and on price it’s more than competitive.
Although the annual conference is Women in Aviation International’s biggest event, the association’s influence extends far beyond the two-day conference. In fact, company leaders attribute some of their success to membership in professional organizations such as WAI.
