A group of personal air transport providers has asked the Joint Planning and Development Office (JPDO) to accelerate the pace of implementation of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen), currently scheduled to become fully operational by about 2025.
Just days after taking the wraps off the fly-by-wire G650 last month, Gulfstream revealed that it has successfully flown a GV testbed fitted with a fiber-optic “fly by light” (FBL) control system.
The FAA has certified a new airborne weather radar system for the Eclipse 500 developed by the Albuquerque, N.M. very light jet builder with assistance from Japan Radio (JRC) in Tokyo. Eclipse CEO Vern Raburn praised the approval as an example of the company’s ability to develop and certify its own technologies for the Eclipse 500.
Through its JetPlan flight planning service, Jeppesen for the last couple of years has been offering RAIM (receiver autonomous integrity monitoring) prediction reports to customers who use its JetPlan flight planning service. The Colorado firm is reminding pilots who use GPS Rnav for primary navigation about a new U.S. requirement for such reporting that went into effect on March 31.
What began as a clever idea by two former Eclipse Aviation engineers culminated last month with TSO approval for Aspen Avionics’ Evolution Pilot and Pro primary flight displays. Shipments of the EFD1000 Pilot product started on March 31, and will be followed this month by the market introduction of the Pro version.
After a nine-month selection process, the company that plans to bring the Twin Otter back into production has chosen Honeywell’s Primus Apex integrated flight deck for new-build airplanes expected to enter service next year. Honeywell describes the equipment as an “intuitive alternative for turboprops and light and midsize business jets.” The avionics have also been chosen for the Pilatus PC-12 and Grob SPn.
Dassault has selected Honeywell to supply a communications gateway (CG-710) and multi-channel satcom systems (MCS-7120) for all Falcon 900 and 2000 series business jets and the Falcon 7X. The technology is intended to provide a bridge between passengers and their laptops, as well as voice-over-IP calling capability and BlackBerry e-mail access. The system will provide benefits for pilots, too.
Iridium last month said it has reached agreements with three companies to develop the company’s next-generation satellite constellation, called Iridium Next. Lockheed Martin, Space Systems Loral and Thales Alenia Space will develop design concepts, review critical engineering and evaluate performance and capabilities. Iridium said it will select two additional partners for detailed system development.
It seems as though every few months Internet message boards erupt with complaints about Jeppesen’s JeppView electronic chart and navigation database service. Now-familiar stories about servers going down, NavData downloads locking up and hardware incompatibility issues clearly are making some users yearn for the good old days–when electronic nav database updates came in the mail on CD-ROM.
