In an effort to cut down on the more than 2,000 false distress signals it receives each year from emergency locator transmitters (ELT) and emergency position indicating radio beacons, the Civil Air Patrol has launched its “Don’t Trash the Beacon” public awareness campaign. “The false-alarm rate is between 90- and 95-percent now,” said John Demarais, CAP’s deputy director for operations.

House aviation subcommittee chairman Jerry Costello (D-Ill.) has joined Rep. James Oberstar (D-Minn.), chairman of the full House Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I) Committee, in opposing an Obama Administration plan to institute user fees to balance the FAA budget starting in Fiscal Year 2010.
“You can bet the insurance market is going to change. All the ingredients are in place and it’s only a matter of time,” Jim Gardner, v-p of Insuramerica Aviation, an affiliate of J. Smith Lanier, told AIN.
In addition to the costs of acquisition, prospective buyers must consider the costs–especially insurance and taxes–they will incur once they own the aircraft. To that end, aircraft management contracts with well thought-out insurance provisions should be integral to the aircraft acquisition process, said Bill Kingsley, an account executive with the Addison, Texas-based brokerage AirSure.
Hawker Beechcraft (HBC) tapped industry veteran Bill Boisture Jr. as its new chairman and CEO. He succeeds Jim Schuster, who announced his pending retirement in November after eight years at the helm of the Wichita-based aircraft manufacturer. Boisture’s high-profile business aviation career includes turns as president of fractional provider NetJets and aircraft manufacturers Gulfstream and Hawker predecessor British Aerospace Corporate Jets.

Air Transport Association president and CEO James May suggested last month that if the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) is fast-tracked like the Interstate Highway System was a half century ago, many of the promised benefits could be fully operational within five years.
