Emphasizing the pivotal role of foreign repair stations in the aviation industry, the Aeronautical Repair Station Association (ARSA) recently testified before the Senate subcommittee on aviation operations, safety and security regarding the oversight of foreign contract maintenance.

FlightSafety International (FSI) has become the first non-domestic training organization to obtain a Part 147 maintenance training certificate from the General Administration of Civil Aviation in China. The CCAR-147 approval follows FlightSafety’s certification by the Chinese aviation authority to provide initial and recurrent pilot training for the Embraer ERJ 145.
Airfoil Services of Malaysia, a joint venture between MTU Aero Engines and Lufthansa Technik, has moved into a new production facility about four times the size of its original location. The new facility, located in Kota Damansara, near Kuala Lumpur, represents an investment of about $14 million. There are currently 350 employees, and that number is expected to increase by about 150 over the next few years.
Citation owners now have another engine maintenance option on the East Coast. Dallas Airmotive’s Millville regional turbine center has added repair, hot-section inspection and field service on Pratt & Whitney Canada PW500 engines. The engine powers the Cessna Citation Bravo, Encore, Encore+, Excel, XLS and XLS+.
Wichita-based Mid-Continent Instruments named Precision Avionics & Instruments (PAI) as an authorized service provider to repair and overhaul the MCI 4300 Lifesaver electric attitude indicator. PAI is the only authorized company in North America outside the factory to be a service facility and provide warranty work for the instruments.
Starting this month, retro crown doors will be available for the King Air 200/B200/300/B300. According to a spokesman for Raisbeck Engineering, the doors are designed to be compatible with the company’s nacelle wing lockers for the King Air 200 and 300. The initial price for the retro crown door kit is $9,250 not including installation.
Embraer has begun construction of an executive jet service center at Williams Gateway Airport in Mesa, Ariz. The center, scheduled to open in mid-2008, will be one of three U.S. facilities dedicated to maintaining the Phenom 100, Phenom 300 and Legacy 600.
While the debate continues to swirl on both sides of the Atlantic over the European Union’s scheduled imposition of a carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions trading program involving air travel, a new initiative to address the problem was launched in June at the Paris Air Show.
