Reinforcing its commitment to vocational training, Lufthansa Technik will be adding 280 young people to its technical careers workforce, up from 235 last year. The company made the announcement recently during a visit by former soccer star Uwe Seeler and the president of the Hamburg chamber of commerce, Frank Horch, to the Lufthansa Technik training workshop in Hamburg. As of this summer, Lufthansa Technik will have about 800 apprentices.

In the five years since Gulfstream established its maintenance center at London Luton, the facility has grown from 28,000 to 56,000 sq ft. It is the only Gulfstream-owned service center to be operated outside the U.S. The MRO became the first FAA-certified aircraft maintenance center outside the U.S. to be awarded the FAA’s Aviation Maintenance Technician Diamond Certificate of Excellence.

Gulfstream Aerospace parent General Dynamics late last month reported a 25-percent increase in profits during the second quarter, thanks in large part to climbing sales of Gulfstream business jets. The company posted a second-quarter profit of $641 million, up from $513 million in the same period a year ago, on sales of $7.3 billion.

Hong Kong’s Metrojet has been given the title of recognized maintenance facility and mobile repair team for Pratt & Whitney Canada engines. The appointment allows the MRO to provide additional service on P&WC engines, including components, engine changes, troubleshooting and various engine inspections.

Líder Aviação, headquartered in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, recently became a Raisbeck-authorized installation center to support Raisbeck Learjet performance system sales. The company will be responsible for selling, installing and maintaining Raisbeck’s ZR Lite and aft fuselage locker for the Learjet 30 series.

Early last month a Boeing 737-300 requiring an 8A check was the first aircraft to be towed into Ameco Beijing’s A380 hangar. A spokesman for the company said it is ready to support aircraft flying to the Olympic Games. The new hangar will simultaneously accommodate six widebody and four narrowbody aircraft, encompassing the spectrum of Boeing and Airbus airplanes, including the A380.

Pratt & Whitney passed one of the most important milestones in its long history as the much-heralded PurePower PW1000G took to the skies last month. Formally known as the Geared Turbofan, or GTF, the PW1000G demonstrator flew on a Boeing 747SP testbed from the company’s Plattsburgh, N.Y.
