In response to oil leaks, Dutch civil aviation authorities have instructed operators of Fokker 50 twin turboprops to check the propellers after each flight. The order was issued early last month and Fokker Services is now developing a Service Bulletin that is expected to be issued before year-end.

Europe is facing a shortage of 3.5 million airport slots by 2025, according to the latest projections by Eurocontrol. At the October Airport Operators Conference in Brussels the ATC management agency confirmed that 20 years from now demand for flights will significantly exceed airport capacity.
Air Canada again added to Embraer’s backlog of 170/190-series jets last month with a firm order for 15 Embraer 175s. The order brings to 60 the number of airplanes Air Canada has ordered from the Brazilian manufacturer and chief competitor of Canada’s Bombardier.
Northwest Airlines pilots last month voted to allow Northwest Airlink partner Pinnacle Airlines to add more 50-seat regional jets to its fleet and open talks over a new pay scale for 70-seat regional jets at the mainline. Part of a concessionary contract that calls for a 15-percent pay cut among pilots and management, the new deal will allow Pinnacle to convert its remaining orders and options on 44-seat Bombardier CRJs to 50-seat CRJ200s.
Pilots for American Eagle, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, ratified a new collective bargaining agreement last month that grants them pay raises and improved retirement benefits over the next four years of a 16-year contract signed in 1997. The new deal grants a pay hike of 4 percent starting on January 1 and another 1 percent starting a year later.
Independence Air (FLYi) and Airbus have agreed to change the terms of a contract for 16 Airbus A319s to allow the troubled low-fare regional to delay deliveries of 10 airplanes by two years. Under the revised deal, Independence may also swap half the airplanes for leased jets bought by lessors and scheduled for delivery next year.
United Airlines has asked for requests for proposal (RFP) from 10 regional airlines to fly up to 70 regional jets on routes now controlled by Appleton, Wis.-based Air Wisconsin. The 10 airlines include all of United’s existing partners, as well as Independence Air–the former United Express carrier turned low-fare competitor to UAL at Washington Dulles and Chicago O’Hare Airports.
In an alarming disclosure, the FAA last month released figures showing that only about two-thirds of all U.S.-registered business jets have received approval to fly in RVSM airspace despite the planned nationwide implementation of the new operating rules less than two months from now.
