At the NBAA Convention last month, Greenwich AeroGroup of Wichita offered live demonstrations of the Iridium OpenPort Aero, described as “the only aviation broadband solution that works everywhere in the world, including remote, oceanic and polar regions,” using Iridium’s worldwide satellite network.

A Russian company called Satellit-Development has plans to develop a heliport between Saint Petersburg’s “beltway” and Pulkovo airport. Dubbed Heli-Drive, it is said to be the first commercial heliport in the country. “I hope our project will help medical and rescue services, as well as private enterprises and guests of Saint Petersburg,” said co-owner Vladimir Skigin.

Eclipse Aerospace’s new 550 very light jet will feature an enhanced vision system (EVS) sensor made by Lexavia. The Lexavia LFS6000 infrared sensor has a 640- by 480-sensor element and 4X zoom. EVS imagery will be displayed on the Eclipse 550’s MFD, which is part of the jet’s Innovative Solutions & Support Avio/IFMS flight deck. The EVS sensor is mounted in a low-profile housing that projects 1.42 inches above the fuselage nose surface.

Operators of the Gulfstream IV, GIV-SP, G400 and G300 can now upgrade their Honeywell FMZ-2000 flight management system with Waas-LPV capability. The new FMS 6.1 upgrade is available from Gulfstream service centers and takes about five days to install, including addition of two GPS antennas, two Waas receivers and two cockpit annunciators.

Jetex Flight Support has taken its first major step to expansion in South America, particularly in Brazil. It recently started supplying fuel to international operators at domestic airports in Brazil. The company sees Brazil as a growing market for private aviation, with business aircraft traffic at airports within 100 miles of São Paulo doubling during the past five years. Jetex said it will work directly with into-plane agents to help lower prices for their clients by eliminating third-party costs.

In late October Bombardier delivered the first of two 75-seat CRJ900s ordered by RwandAir of Kigali, Rwanda. The airline signed the firm order and took options on another two airplanes in March.

Bombardier handed over the ceremonial keys to RwandAir’s dual-class CRJ900 during an event at the manufacturer’s CRJ assembly plant in Mirabel, Québec. Government officials and company executives present for the ceremony included H.E. Edda Mukabagwiza, Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Canada; John Mirenge, CEO of RwandAir; and Mike Arcamone, president of Bombardier Commercial Aircraft.

Virgin Australia said it has reached an agreement in principle to buy a 100-percent stake in Perth, Australia-based Skywest Airlines. Announced on October 30 and still subject to approvals from regulatory authorities and Skywest shareholders, the deal would see the Western Australian regional assume the Virgin Australia brand and, according to Virgin Australia CEO John Borghetti, benefit from further investment by the would-be parent company.

Hurricane Sandy and the subsequent storm that struck the east coast of the U.S. last month forced the world’s largest regional airline company to cancel some 3,100 flights. St. George, Utah-based SkyWest, whose ExpressJet subsidiary flies a network concentrated largely in the eastern half of the U.S., estimates it will lose some $3 million as a result of Sandy and the following week’s Nor’easter.

Hawaiian Airlines’ parent company has begun the process of creating a new regional subsidiary to serve the Hawaiian islands of Molokai and Lanai with a used ATR 42 it bought in late October from Dublin, Ireland’s ASL Aviation Group. A separate purchase agreement between the two companies called for delivery of another ATR 42 last month.
