Flight Display Systems has been demonstrating a new computer facial-recognition system–See3–that it believes will add a new level of protection to owners and operators concerned with aircraft security, in addition to creating a more complete cabin service.

See3 is based on Linus Fast Access facial-recognition software but adds Flight Display’s own proprietary and expanding set of algorithms. The hardware consists of two main components–the camera and computer–both of which already have FAA parts manufacturer approval.

At a time when aviation has achieved an extraordinarily high level of safety, regulators and safety organizations are pushing for more improvements in pilot training to preempt future accidents and ensure that new pilots entering the ranks start off with the right approach. One of the key areas receiving extensive examination is stall training, both in the early stages of ab initio training and how it is taught later to pilots who are flying sophisticated high-performance jets.

Pascal Chrétien, the designer and pilot of an electric rotorcraft that flew in 2011, is forming a company that aims to offer hybrid power for aircraft, notably helicopters. The patented technology is called Tetraero, and according to its promoters its main benefit would be in safety.

Farnborough, UK-based Gama Group continues to grow, opening its new aircraft management base at Switzerland’s Geneva Airport last month and announcing a range of investments at Glasgow Airport in Scotland for next year, including a new hangar and executive aircraft handling terminal.

Last month the company celebrated the first year of operations at Fairoaks Airport near Farnborough, where it established Gama Engineering at what was the birthplace of the Gama company in the 1980s.

Venice, Italy-based Superjet International held a “roll-in” ceremony at its hangar at Venice Marco Polo International Airport on October 19 for the first Sukhoi Superjet 100 destined for delivery to Mexico’s Interjet. The airplane arrived in Tessera, an administrative division or frazione of Venice, on October 6 following a roughly 4,500-nm journey from Sukhoi Civil Aircraft’s manufacturing site in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Russia.

Avincis is the new name for World Helicopters, a firm that combined the Bond Aviation Group with Inaer when it took over the former last spring. The group, owned by KKR and Investindustrial, operates 400 aircraft, 350 of them helicopters.

Republic Airways’ efforts to “restructure” its Indianapolis-based Chautauqua Airlines subsidiary appear to have yielded their intended results. During a November 1 conference call to discuss the company’s third-quarter earnings, Republic CEO Bryan Bedford reported that the regional airline holding company has found a way to mitigate future negative cash flows at Chautauqua by some $45 million over five years, largely by reaching new business agreements with several “key stakeholders ” and returning idled aircraft to revenue service.

Charter operators are facing a costly training issue that could see pilots and fleets grounded unless a solution is found. According to operators, FAA inspectors are requiring strict compliance with an interpretation of the regulations that cover qualifications of instructors and check airmen. The result will be a lack of qualified instructors and check airmen employed by flight training organizations.

Clearwater, Fla.-based fractional provider Avantair restarted operations on November 9, following a nearly three-week voluntary grounding of its approximately 60 Piaggio Avantis. The voluntary grounding was precipitated by a July 28 incident in which an Avantair-operated Avanti shed an elevator in flight and flew two subsequent legs before the crew noticed that the control surface was missing. “The Piaggio continued to fly normally for a few reasons, including its dual elevators, forward canards and high wings,” according to Avantair CEO Steve Santo.

Proposed amendments to FAA maintenance regulations affecting contract maintenance providers and carriers operating under Parts 121 and 135 have evoked some skepticism as well as support from organizations representing repair stations and business aviation operators.
