This Raytheon Hawker 800XP operated by UK charter firm Markoss Aviation has been approved to operate at London City Airport. The UK Civil Aviation Authority requires that the aircraft type and individual operator’s aircraft and crew get clearance to use the downtown gateway’s 5.5-degree steep approach. Markoss is based at nearby Biggin Hill Airport and its 800XP is currently the only UK-based example of its type approved for London City.

Citing a desire by the Associação Brasileira de Aviação Geral (ABAG) to assume a more extensive role in organizing the annual Latin American Business Aviation Conference & Exhibition (LABACE), NBAA has announced, “After three years, ABAG is moving into the lead and will coordinate the event from São Paulo.
After an extended gestation period and months of uncertainty about first delivery, Eclipse Aviation delivered its first production very light jet (VLJ). When the FAA awarded an airworthiness certificate for the first production Eclipse 500 in the closing hours of last year the Albuquerque, N.M.-based tyro airframe manufacturer immediately initiated a virtual “delivery” in which the co-owners completed the documents via fax.
While the FAA did rescind Notice N8000.336 regarding addition of airplanes to Part 135 certificates, late last year it reissued the policy in a new notice, with only one change. Like N8000.336, Notice N8000.343 requires FAA principal inspectors to obtain concurrence from FAA headquarters before allowing an operator to add a new turbine-powered airplane to its OpSpecs.
The FAA is concerned that some noise-canceling headsets might prevent pilots from hearing audible alarms, abnormal engine noise or other mechanical sounds. The agency, in a January 1 Information for Operators (InFO 07001), said noise attenuation of headsets “may vary by make and model” and if these sounds cannot be detected “discontinue the use of noise-canceling headsets.”
Universal Weather & Aviation said it could take until the middle of this month before it can fully repair damage to its Paris Le Bourget FBO. The facility suffered extensive fire and smoke damage during an overnight blaze on January 3. The company established a temporary operations center and made other arrangements for passengers and crew.
IFR special traffic management programs (STMP) are in effect during the ski season at three Colorado airports (Aspen, Eagle and Rifle) during these dates: February 15 through February 20 and March 15 through April 3. The daily STMP start/end times this year begin each day at 8 a.m. MST and end at 6 p.m. MST to help align the STMP with sunrise/sunset times, since many operators are unable to operate outside daylight hours.
The final report of the FAA/industry rulemaking age-60 committee is now posted on the agency’s Web site. The committee was unable to reach consensus on whether to increase the mandatory retirement age of 60 for airline pilots. It took some deep pockets, but Raytheon Company has found a buyer for its Raytheon Aircraft subsidiary.
Late last year, Raytheon announced “a definitive agreement” that will turn Raytheon Aircraft over to Hawker Beechcraft Corp., newly formed by Onex Partners of Toronto and GS Capital Partners (an affiliate of New York-based Goldman Sachs).
The FAA last month issued a final rule on ETOPS (extended-range twin-engine operational performance standards) that allows operators of commercial aircraft–now including Part 135–to fly virtually anywhere (up to 240 minutes single-engine flying time from a suitable diversion airport), provided the aircraft is capable of protecting passengers and flight crew during an emergency diversion of any length.
